Leeds United’s £20 Million Bid for Shea Charles Got Rejected. Manchester United Is Watching.

Southampton just told Leeds United that £20 million isn’t enough for Shea Charles. Not even close.

The bid got rejected. And according to journalist Ben Jacobs, the gap between what Leeds offered and what Southampton wants is significant. Not a small tweak in add-ons or payment structure. A real difference in valuation.

That opens the door for Manchester United, who’ve been tracking the 23-year-old Northern Ireland international as part of a bigger midfield rebuild under Michael Carrick. Charles made 38 appearances for a relegated Southampton side last season, scoring six goals and logging over 2,400 minutes. For a team that went down, that’s production worth paying attention to.

Why Southampton isn’t budging

Jacobs made it clear this is a selling-club decision, not a player pushing for an exit. Southampton knows they’ve got leverage. Charles has 76 appearances for the club, captained Northern Ireland 35 times internationally, and at 23 he’s got Premier League experience and defensive discipline that translates. That profile matches what United needs at the base of midfield.

Leeds and Southampton are still talking. The door isn’t shut between them. But it stalled at the first offer, and Southampton has reportedly started looking at replacements. That suggests they’re ready to sell — just at the right number.

United’s midfield mess

Manchester United’s midfield overhaul this summer is massive. Casemiro, 33, is heading to Inter Miami once his contract expires. Manuel Ugarte is expected to follow him out, with United lowering his asking price to move him faster. They’ve already agreed a fee with Atalanta for Éderson. Talks with West Ham for Mateus Fernandes are ongoing but complicated by a valuation gap. Aurélien Tchouaméni and Alex Scott are also on the list.

That’s a lot of targets. And spreading attention across too many negotiations carries risk — United could end up with none of them if they don’t close quickly enough.

Charles would be the younger, cheaper option if Southampton can be persuaded to come off a number that Leeds already found too rich. Whether United is willing to bid higher than Leeds did, and by how much, is still unconfirmed. They’ve been working on midfield targets since May, with Éderson as the early priority — athletic, positionally sound, fits a high-tempo system.

Right now, Leeds and Southampton are still in dialogue. United is monitoring. And Charles is waiting to see who actually pays what Southampton wants. That might be the deciding factor for everyone involved.
