Leeds Just Bet $25 Million on a Midfielder Man United Was Watching

Leeds United didn’t wait around. They put real money on the table for Shea Charles, and now Manchester United has a decision to make.

The Yorkshire club submitted an opening bid worth more than $25 million to Southampton for the 22-year-old midfielder, according to multiple reports. Simon Jones of the Daily Mail broke the news on X, and TEAMtalk later confirmed the offer is in the range of $25 million plus add-ons.

Charles isn’t just any mid-tier target. He’s a player Manchester United has been tracking as a cost-effective option in a summer where they’re overhauling their midfield. United already agreed to a deal with Atalanta for Ederson, who said he’s one step from joining the club. Talks with West Ham over Mateus Fernandes are still active. But Charles was on the list alongside Hayden Hackney of Middlesbrough as a cheaper alternative if the bigger moves stalled.

Why Leeds jumped early

Leeds has been watching Charles for about 18 months now. They like his versatility. He can play central midfield, obviously, but he’s also comfortable at full-back or out wide. That kind of flexibility matters at Elland Road, especially for a team that expects to compete for promotion or survival depending on how the season shakes out.

Charles already made his name this season. He scored the goal that knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup. Then he bagged a winner against Middlesbrough in the Championship playoff semifinals, though that game got overshadowed by the spygate mess that followed Southampton around afterward.

According to TEAMtalk, Southampton has already identified a replacement for Charles, which suggests they’re expecting this transfer to go through. Leeds and Southampton are currently talking through the details to try and reach an agreement.

What this means for Manchester United

The interesting part for United is that Charles is reportedly open to joining Leeds. He wants to play in the Premier League, and he sees Leeds as a legitimate path there. If United wanted to swoop in and steal him away from a familiar rival, now would be the time to do it.

Michael Carrick’s midfield rebuild was always going to include multiple signings. Ederson is basically done. Fernandes is still being negotiated. And names like Aurelien Tchouameni, Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba are all in the mix at various price points. Charles was always more of a contingency plan, but contingency plans become primary plans when other doors close.

The question now is whether United lets Leeds win this one or decides to jump into the bidding. Charles is 22, a Manchester City academy product, and has shown he can perform in big moments. Leeds clearly thinks he’s worth the investment. United has to decide if they agree enough to go beyond just watching.
