Manchester United has quietly moved the needle on a major midfield target, but it’s a different chase that could turn into a full-blown tug-of-war with Arsenal.
Michael Carrick’s squad finished third last season, and the front office is doubling down on the middle of the park. Only four senior midfielders are currently on the roster, so two summer additions are pretty much a necessity. The biggest name on the list? Mateus Fernandes.
West Ham wants £80 million for the Portuguese midfielder. United is trying to push that down to around £65 million. And according to reports, they’ve already cleared the first hurdle — personal terms are agreed. That doesn’t mean a deal is done, but it does mean the hard part now is just the price tag.
But here’s where things get messy for United. They’ve also got their eye on West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville, another attacking option with pace and Premier League experience. TEAMtalk has confirmed contact has been made. The problem is Arsenal is now sniffing around too.
The Gunners are looking to replace Gabriel Martinelli, and Summerville fits the profile. If Arsenal moves decisively, United could end up losing out on a player they’d already started working on. That would sting, especially given the rivalry between the two clubs in the transfer market lately.
United Holds Firm on Sesko Despite Spanish Interest
Meanwhile, Benjamin Sesko’s name keeps popping up in Spain. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are both reportedly interested in the United forward after his first season at Old Trafford. The numbers tell part of the story — 11 goals in the Premier League, and he was the most prolific striker in the league during the second half of the campaign.
United’s response has been clear: not happening. The club has no intention of moving him, and they’ve shut down inquiries from third parties representing the Spanish clubs. Sesko is viewed as a core piece going forward, not a trade chip.
That leaves Atletico and Barca looking elsewhere for striker help. And it gives United fans one less thing to worry about as the summer window heats up.
For now, the focus stays on Fernandes and the West Ham negotiations. If United can shave £15 million off that asking price while fending off Arsenal’s interest in Summerville, this could shape up to be a very productive window. But hijacks happen fast in June, and the Gunners have a habit of showing up late to steal a deal.
