LeBron James told the Lakers he plans to play season 24 somewhere else. That was a week ago. Since then the basketball internet has done what it always does — spun wildly through every possible jersey, every salary cap loophole, every trade machine scenario. But this time it feels different because James is 41, turning 42 on December 30, and he’s said he’d take the veteran’s minimum to chase a ring.
Rich Paul went on his podcast with Max Kellerman Friday and rattled off the realistic destinations. Shams Charania narrowed it to six: the Cavaliers, Heat, Nuggets, 76ers, Timberwolves, and Warriors. So let’s rank them by actual championship probability if James suits up there next season.
1. Philadelphia 76ers
The Sixers weren’t on anyone’s radar for LeBron until they traded for Jaylen Brown. That changed everything. Now you’re looking at Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and V. J. Edgecombe as the young guard. Add LeBron as a playmaker who doesn’t have to be the primary scorer? That’s the best roster fit of any option here.
James can coast through the regular season. He can have off nights. Brown is still in his prime and can carry games. Maxey is an All-NBA guard. Embiid is Embiid when he’s healthy. The concern is Embiid’s health — he just had appendix surgery and has never played a full season. But the depth around him is good enough to absorb some missed games. The 76ers have the most complete roster on this list and the clearest path to a title.
2. Minnesota Timberwolves
Anthony Edwards is arguably the best player in the league right now. He’s young, he’s explosive, and he hasn’t hit his prime yet. Pair him with LaMelo Ball, Jaden McDaniels on the wing, and Rudy Gobert as the defensive anchor, and you have a real contender. The Timberwolves traded Julius Randle and Naz Reid, so there’s a hole at power forward that James could fill naturally.
But the red flags are real. LaMelo Ball has missed significant time with injuries every season. Edwards missed 21 games this year and then got hurt in the playoffs — hyperextended knee, bone bruise, played through it but wasn’t himself. If those two go down, LeBron is back to carrying the load. That’s exactly what he’s trying to leave behind.
3. Denver Nuggets
Nikola Jokić is the best player James could possibly play with. He’s a system. He makes everyone better. Jamal Murray is a proven playoff scorer. Aaron Gordon would feast on lobs from LeBron. The Nuggets have been one piece away since their 2023 title run. Maybe James is that piece.
But the depth isn’t there like Philly or Minnesota. And Jokić missed 16 games this season with a knee injury. If both he and Murray miss time, LeBron is back to being the guy. The Nuggets roster thins out quickly after the top three. It’s a good option. It’s not the best option.
4. Cleveland Cavaliers
Third stint. Sentimental. Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen. The three-point shooting is elite, which has always helped James. But this team isn’t a true contender. They beat the Pistons in the first round but showed they live and die by the three. Harden and Mitchell are streaky. If they go cold, LeBron has to be LeBron again. That’s not what he wants at 42. It would be a nice story. Probably not a championship story.
5. Miami Heat
The Heat got Giannis Antetokounmpo. That alone makes them interesting. Giannis and LeBron together would be incredible defensively — especially with Bam Adebayo roaming. Erik Spoelstra is a better coach now than he was during the Big 3 era. But the Heat have no shooting and no cap flexibility. The roster holes are glaring. It would be the hardest path to a ring of any of these six teams.
6. Golden State Warriors
LeBron and Steph Curry on the same team would be appointment television. Add Draymond Green and the history these three share? Pure basketball nirvana. But the Warriors as currently constructed are not contenders. They don’t have the depth of Philly or Minnesota. They don’t have the top-end talent of Denver or Miami. They’d need major roster upgrades, and it’s not clear they have the assets to make them. Fun? Absolutely. A title favorite? Not even close.
