He got put through again soon after, couldn’t quite connect. Argentina’s defenders handled him physically all night, and for long stretches they kept him quiet. But as Spain cranked up pressure late in regulation, Yamal started finding space. He turned Nicolas Tagliafico with a nasty piece of skill. He slipped between Julian Alvarez and Alexis Mac Allister with those quick feet he’s become famous for.
He didn’t score the winner. That part isn’t in the script. But he was on his knees at the final whistle, and Messi was walking off with that hollow stare he’s worn a few times before in big games.
Messi couldn’t find the magic
Argentina’s captain kicked off the match and then basically disappeared for 15 minutes. That wasn’t unusual for Argentina as a whole. They went missing for long chunks of the game, and Messi went with them. His best chance came early, a through ball that sent him sprinting at Unai Simon, but the ball got too far ahead of him and the goalkeeper got there first to hack it clear.
He did have moments. He drew a foul from Rodri after carrying through midfield. In extra time, he pulled off a ridiculous 360-degree pirouette with the ball glued to his foot, then sprayed a pass wide. That was a flash of the old guy. But those moments were rare. Spain bottled him up, and the Golden Boot went to Kylian Mbappe instead.
The weird part is that Yamal and Messi first met in 2007 when Yamal’s parents entered him into a newspaper contest, and he ended up in a UNICEF photoshoot being bathed by a 20-year-old Messi. Nineteen years later, the baby from that photo was the one celebrating on the MetLife turf while the legend walked off empty. That’s the kind of story that makes you wonder if someone in the writers’ room is pressing too hard.
But it happened. Spain has its second World Cup. Yamal has a trophy to go with the hype. And Messi has to sit with the reality that his last shot at another one ended with a whimper, not a roar.
