Spain’s World Cup opener was supposed to be a routine win. Instead, it turned into a 0-0 slog against Cape Verde that left everyone scratching their heads. But one guy isn’t panicking: Lamine Yamal.
The 18-year-old Barcelona star spoke to Spanish TV after the match and basically told fans to chill. He promised that the team will bounce back Sunday against Saudi Arabia. “We will go to achieve that victory,” Yamal said. “We will bring out our playing style and show who we are.”
A frustrating start for Spain
Cape Verde came in as massive underdogs. They played disciplined, organized defense and never let Spain get comfortable. Luis de la Fuente’s side controlled possession but couldn’t find a finish. It was one of those games where everything felt just a little off.
Now Spain faces Saudi Arabia in what feels like a must-win. Another slip-up and the group stage gets interesting in the wrong way.
Yamal’s minutes are being managed carefully
The teenager came into the tournament with a recent hamstring injury. So Spain’s staff is being cautious. Against Cape Verde he only played 19 minutes off the bench. That’s not ideal when you’re one of your team’s most dangerous attackers.
But there’s good news. Coach De la Fuente said Yamal is expected to play around 45 minutes against Saudi Arabia. They’re ramping him up slowly. Smart move, honestly. You don’t want to rush a guy that young back and risk a bigger problem later in the tournament.
Yamal isn’t worried
The kid doesn’t seem fazed by anything. He’s 18 and already one of the most talked-about players in the world. Asked about the draw and the pressure, he stayed calm. He said the team is united and they’ll get through this together.
He even mentioned July 19 in his message to fans. That’s the date of the World Cup final. So yeah, he’s thinking big. He’s not hiding it.
Whether Spain can actually make it that far depends on a lot of things. Better finishing. More minutes for their young star. And maybe a little luck. But Yamal is putting that confidence on display early. We’ll see Sunday if the team can back it up.
