Derby County’s Brereton Diaz Deal May Fall Through. Here’s Why Man United’s Shea Lacey Makes Sense.

After a season that surprised basically everyone outside of Pride Park, Derby County is staring down a summer that could go a few different ways. The Rams finished eighth in the Championship in 2025/26, a massive jump from the year before when they barely avoided relegation on the final day. John Eustace has built something real there. But now comes the hard part: keeping it together.

Ben Brereton Diaz was a big part of that turnaround. The Chilean international scored seven goals and added three assists in 40 league appearances on loan from Southampton. Eustace has been open about wanting him back. Brereton Diaz himself basically said the same thing, calling his loan move to Derby a no-brainer. The fans want it. The manager wants it. But in football, wanting something doesn’t always get it done.

There are other clubs sniffing around. And if Southampton decides to sell Brereton Diaz elsewhere, or if they want too much money, Derby needs a backup plan. That backup plan should be a trip up the M1 to Manchester United.

Shea Lacey is the kind of gamble Derby can afford to take

Shea Lacey is 19 years old. He made his United first-team debut in December 2025, coming off the bench and looking like he belonged. He’s a left-footed winger who plays off the right flank, likes to cut inside, and has the kind of dribbling ability that makes defenders back off. Michael Carrick gave him minutes. That alone tells you something.

The problem for Lacey is that United’s right side is crowded. Bryan Mbeumo is there. Amad Diallo is there. Patrick Dorgu can play there. Lacey isn’t getting meaningful first-team minutes at Old Trafford next season. Not unless injuries pile up. So a loan move makes sense for everyone. Derby would be a smart landing spot.

Eustace switched to a 4-2-3-1 late in the season and got good results out of it. Jaydon Banel, a Burnley loanee, played a key role on the wing. That system needs wide players who can create. Lacey fits that profile. He’s not a direct replacement for Brereton Diaz, who played more as a striker or wide forward, but he offers a different kind of threat. He’s the kind of player who can unlock a defense with one move.

There’s risk here. Lacey hasn’t played regular senior football. He’s still growing into his body. Loans don’t always work out. But the upside is real. Jesse Lingard went to Derby on loan from United back in the day and came out a better player. Lacey could follow that same path.

Eustace has shown he can get the most out of loan players. Brereton Diaz, Banel, Patrick Agyemang, Rhian Brewster — all of them contributed last season. If the Brereton Diaz deal falls through, Lacey isn’t a consolation prize. He’s a different bet entirely. One that might pay off bigger than anyone expects.
