Karim Adeyemi hasn’t even played an official minute for Barcelona yet, but he’s already drawing a pretty clear line about the competition. Asked if he’s worried about fighting for minutes with Lamine Yamal, the German winger didn’t hesitate. He said no. He’s not afraid of any player. That’s not arrogance, either. Adeyemi joined Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund this summer, and he’s set to make his unofficial debut in a friendly against Birmingham City on Friday. Before that, he sat down with Mundo Deportivo and laid out exactly what he expects from this move. And it starts with the guy running the sideline.
That Hansi Flick connection
Adeyemi already knows Flick from the German national team. So when Flick called him about Barcelona, there wasn’t much selling required. Adeyemi put it pretty plainly: “Convince is the wrong word. He simply called me and asked if I wanted to go. I told him of course, because it’s the biggest club in the world and these opportunities only come once.”
He trusts Flick. They’re close. And Adeyemi believes that familiarity will help him settle in faster than most new signings. He said he hopes Flick sees things in his game that can contribute to the team on the field. That’s not just lip service. Speed, versatility and a dream he’s chasing
Adeyemi is fast. Everyone knows that. But he’s quick to point out that speed isn’t the only thing he brings. “I’m good in one-on-one situations, I can play on the wing, as a centre forward. I think I’m versatile and I think that’s what makes me somewhat different.”
That versatility could be huge for Barcelona, especially with Flick rotating through a packed schedule. Adeyemi can stretch defenses wide or run through the middle. That gives Flick options without changing the entire shape of the attack.
And about that attack. Lamine Yamal is already a fan favorite, a 17-year-old who looks like he’s been doing this for a decade. Some guys might feel the pressure of sharing a position with a talent like that. Adeyemi isn’t one of them. “I know that if I give my best, I’ll have a chance to play,” he said. That’s it.
