Manchester United want to add depth to their back line this summer, and one name on their list is Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae. But here’s the thing: they might not be the favorites to land him.
According to Christian Falk of CF Bayern Insider, the South Korean international is very much on United’s radar. But Juventus currently holds the edge in the race for his signature. That makes sense when you think about it. Kim spent a season at Napoli before moving to Germany, and he knows Serie A inside out. A return to Italy would mean no adjustment period, no language barrier, no guessing whether the tactical style suits him. He already knows it does.
Why Kim Min-jae makes sense for United
Kim is 29, which puts him right in his prime. Last season at Bayern, he logged 25 appearances but only 1,605 minutes. That’s not nearly enough for a guy at this stage of his career. He needs to play every week, and United can offer that. The Red Devils have Champions League soccer locked in for next season, and they’re going to need a deeper squad to compete on multiple fronts.
The physical side of his game is obvious. He’s been called a “very powerful” defender before, and that strength translates to the Premier League. He’s already proven himself in Italy and Germany. English football wouldn’t be a stretch for him.
But here’s the complication. United has the money, no question. Juventus doesn’t have the same financial muscle. What Juve has is history. They have a system Kim already fits. And they have the ability to offer him a clear path to being a starter from day one.
What’s the hold up?
The decision might come down to ambition versus comfort. United’s project is bigger right now. They’re building something under Erik ten Hag, and they need experienced pieces like Kim to make it work. But the player has to weigh that against the risk of leaving a club where he already felt settled for a league that’s more demanding physically.
Bayern isn’t exactly pushing him out the door, but they’re not blocking a move either. If United puts an official offer on the table, that changes the math. But as of now, the signals point toward Turin.
Kim has played in two of Europe’s top leagues and won trophies in both. This might be his last chance to join a club the size of Manchester United. Whether that’s enough to outweigh the appeal of a familiar home in Italy remains to be seen.
