Jordan’s First World Cup Win Slips Away as Algeria Storms Back in Group J

Jordan had a real shot at history on Tuesday. The World Cup debutants went up 1-0 in the first half against Algeria, and for a while it looked like they’d finally get that first win. Instead, Algeria flipped the script with two goals from corner kicks and sent Jordan packing from the 2026 tournament.

Nizar Al-Rashdan put Jordan ahead with a composed finish in the 29th minute. It wasn’t flashy, but it was exactly what a team in its first World Cup needed — a lead to hold onto. And for the next 40 minutes, Jordan did just that. They packed the box, dared Algeria to break them down, and held firm until halftime.

But Algeria came out of the break a different team. More aggressive, more direct, and they started winning set pieces. The equalizer came in the 63rd minute when Ahmed Nadhir Benbouali rose above everyone to head home a Riyad Mahrez corner. Ball game changed right there.

The winner? Another corner, another defensive breakdown. Amine Gouiri slipped past his man, stayed just onside, and poked it home in the 82nd minute. For Jordan, it was a brutal lesson in how quickly momentum shifts at this level.

The bigger picture in Group J

Algeria’s win sets up a winner-take-all matchup with Austria for second place in Group J. Both teams are tied on points, and the loser is probably going home. Austria has been solid but not spectacular, so Algeria has to like its chances.

As for Jordan, this was always going to be a tough group. They came in as underdogs and played like it — gutsy but not quite sharp enough in the moments that matter. They’ll head back to Asia with some pride from that first-half performance, but no points and a lot of questions about how to close out games at this level.

Fans online noted the irony: Jordan’s first-ever World Cup goal came in a match where they couldn’t protect a lead. That’s the kind of stuff that stings for a while.
