Jordan Walker Just Did Something No Cardinals Player Has Done in Home Run Derby History

The Philadelphia Phillies were hosting the 2026 MLB All-Star Game festivities. But the night belonged to a 24-year-old from St. Louis who walked into Citizens Bank Park and walked out with a trophy.

Jordan Walker beat Kyle Schwarber in the Home Run Derby final on Monday night, and he did it with a walk-off homer. The final score was 12-11. The Philly crowd went quiet. Walker’s teammates went nuts. It was the kind of moment that makes the Derby memorable even when the host city’s guy loses.

First in Cardinals History

This is a bigger deal than it might sound like at first. No St. Louis Cardinals player had ever won the Home Run Derby. Not one. Albert Pujols got close back in 2003 but lost to Garret Anderson. That was it. For a franchise with this many Hall of Famers and sluggers, it’s kind of wild it took until 2026 for someone to finally get it done.

Walker tied Boston’s Willson Contreras for the most homers in the first round. Then he beat Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero in the semifinals, 6-5. That set up the final against Schwarber, who was swinging in his home ballpark with a crowd behind him. Didn’t matter.

Walker’s Breakout Year Keeps Getting Better

The Derby win is just the latest chapter in what’s shaping up to be a monster season for Walker. He came into the All-Star break hitting .294 with a .354 on-base percentage and a .532 slugging percentage. All three are career highs. He also had 22 home runs and 74 RBIs at the break, both career bests.

That’s not bad for a guy who was still figuring things out at the major league level a couple years ago. The power has always been there. The consistency is what’s new. And now he’s got a Derby trophy to show for it.

Schwarber gave him a fight, though. The Phillies slugger went deep 11 times in the final. But Walker just kept answering. When he needed one more to close it out, he found it.

This is a developing story and more details will come out as the All-Star break continues. But for now, Cardinals fans have something they’ve never had before: a Home Run Derby champion.
