Jonathan David Just Made Canadian World Cup History. It Only Took Two Goals.

Canada went into the halftime break against Qatar with a 3-0 lead on Thursday. And that scoreline alone would have been huge for a program still looking for its first World Cup win. But the guy making it happen was Jonathan David. He scored twice in the first half. The second one, at 45+2 minutes, came off a rebound from a teammate’s header. It wasn’t pretty. It didn’t have to be.

That second goal is the one that put David in the books. According to ESPN Insights, David is the first Canadian man ever to score multiple goals in a single World Cup match. Not the first to have a brace. The first to have a multi-goal game, period. For a country that has only made three World Cup appearances — 1986, 2022, and now 2026 — that’s a pretty big deal.

David, who’s 26 and plays for Juventus, has been carrying the load for this offense. But it’s not like Canada has a long, storied history here. Their first game in 1986 was a loss. Their 2022 run ended without a point. So if they hold this lead — they were up 4-0 by the 65th minute — it’ll be Canada’s first ever victory on the World Cup stage. That’s a stat that sounds wild until you remember just how recent the country’s soccer rise has been.

A long time coming for Canadian soccer

This isn’t like the U.S. or Mexico, where World Cup appearances are almost expected. Canada has spent decades on the outside looking in. The 2022 team got a lot of attention for Alphonso Davies and David, but they went 0-3. This time around, they came in with something to prove. And so far, they’re proving it.

The game against Qatar isn’t over yet as of this writing. But the moment is already there. David’s brace is the kind of thing that gets carved into national soccer history. And for a player who left Lille for Juventus and has been quietly consistent at the highest level, this is the kind of spotlight he deserves.

One thing to keep an eye on: Canada still has more group stage games ahead. If they can build on this result, they could make a real push. But for now, they’ve got their first win in sight and a guy named Jonathan David in the record book.
