The New York Yankees are in free fall, and they just got another reason to hold their breath.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. left Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Twins with discomfort in his right big toe. X-rays came back clean, according to The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty, but the two-time All-Star was walking carefully as he exited. That’s not the kind of sight any team wants to see right now, especially one that’s already limping through its worst stretch of the season.
The Yankees lost 6-1 at home, dropping their ninth game in the last 10. A series that was supposed to be a chance to reset against a beatable Twins team instead turned into another display of everything that’s gone wrong. The pitching has been shaky. The lineup has gone cold. And now the injury list keeps growing.
Aaron Boone doesn’t have a lot of room to work with when he fills out the lineup card. Losing Chisholm for any length of time would be another gut punch to an offense that’s already inconsistent. The 2025 Silver Slugger winner is hitting just .225 this season with 12 home runs, 33 RBIs and 26 stolen bases through 85 games. Those aren’t All-Star numbers, but his blend of power and speed is still something this team badly needs.
Another blow for a banged-up roster
Let’s be honest. The Yankees still have a decent shot at making the playoffs in a weak American League. They’re 49-40, and barring a total collapse, they’ll probably get in. But that’s not the same as being a serious contender. And serious contenders don’t drop nine out of 10 in July.
The toe issue is the latest in a string of problems that’s testing the depth of this roster. Chisholm has scuffled at the plate all year, but he’s still one of the few guys in that lineup who can change a game with one swing or one stolen base. If he misses time, the Yankees lose that threat entirely.
Boone is expected to provide an update on Chisholm’s status during his postgame press conference. The team hasn’t said anything official yet about whether he’ll need a trip to the injured list. But the way he was moving after leaving the game, it’s hard to feel optimistic.
For a team that’s been searching for answers all month, this is the last thing they needed.
