Bryce Harper was sitting around when his phone buzzed. It was a voicemail from Rob Manfred, the commissioner of baseball. The message was simple: Harper had made the All-Star team for the 2026 season. Nothing fancy. Just a quick heads up from the league office.
When reporters asked Harper about it Sunday, they wanted to know if he considers himself an elite player. He didn’t exactly bite on that question. Instead, he did what Harper always does. He deflected, then doubled down on his own standards.
“I don’t care,” Harper said, per MLB.com. “That’s up to you guys to decide that. Every year I come in, I’ve got an opportunity to be great at what I do. The numbers show right now. They speak for themselves. But again, I know they can be better. I know I can be better.”
Harper is hitting .294 with 24 homers and an OPS north of .920. Those are All-Star numbers by any reasonable measure. But he’s not wired to sit back and enjoy them. He told reporters he’s working on that part — the enjoyment part.
“I need to work on enjoying being good,” Harper said. “I still just don’t think I’m that right now. I’m not where I want to be. You know? Does that make sense? Every year, I always say I just want to be better and better and better. Wherever the numbers are right now, they don’t really matter to me. I just want to keep going and keep getting better, keep the numbers going, keep winning games and help the team win.”
Harper’s hunger fuels a Phillies team that’s heating up
That mentality is exactly what the Phillies need right now. They’re sitting at 50-39, good for second place in the National League East. Not bad for a team that went through a managerial change in-season. Don Mattingly took over as interim manager and the club has looked sharper ever since. Harper is a big reason why.
He’s not the only one producing, of course. The lineup has depth. But Harper sets the tone. When your best player is out there saying his own numbers don’t matter and he still wants to improve, it filters through the whole clubhouse. Hard to coast when the superstar won’t let himself.
The Phillies were playing the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. A win would push them even closer to the top of the division. But for Harper, it’s just another step. Another game where he can get a little better. Another chance to prove — not to anyone else, but to himself — that the numbers can go higher.
