The New York Knicks are defending champions. That sentence still takes some getting used to for anyone who remembers the 2000s. But the real hangover is just starting.
Philadelphias front office spent the summer loading up. Miami did the same. Even Cleveland and Toronto are lurking. The Knicks brought back almost everyone from their title run — Jordan Clarkson officially re-signed, and the core is intact — but they lost Mitchell Robinson to injury, and the rest of the East got noticeably scarier while they stood mostly still.
Philly Went and Got a Two-Way Star
The 76ers traded Paul George and two future first-round picks to land Jaylen Brown. That move alone reshapes the conference. Brown gives Philly something George never quite did at his age: a legit two-way force who can guard the Knicks best wings while scoring 25-plus a night. Pair him with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Anfernee Simons, rookie VJ Edgecomb, and Dean Wade, and that starting five looks like a real problem. The 76ers also poached Ariel Hukporti from New York. Depth move, sure, but it stings.
Miami Did Something Bigger
The Heat didn’t just tinker. They went and got Giannis Antetokounmpo. The package going out was serious — Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, the 13th pick in the 2026 draft, two unprotected first-rounders, a pick swap, and a second-round pick — but Miami now rolls out Giannis next to Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins, Davion Mitchell, and Tim Hardaway Jr. The depth behind them is thin. Bobby Portis and Nikola Jovic are the only known reserves. But top-end talent wins in the playoffs, and Miami has two of the best 15 players on the planet.
The Rest of the Conference Isn’t Standing Still Either
Toronto has a Kawhi Leonard trade sitting in limbo while the league investigates tampering with the Clippers. If that deal goes through, Leonard joins Scottie Barnes, Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett, and Jakob Poeltl. That starting five can hang with anyone. The bench is shallow, but the Raptors could push for a top-four seed.
Cleveland hasnt made a big move yet. But the rumors keep coming. LeBron James could return to his hometown team in 2026, which would pair him with Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen, and Max Strus. There’s also chatter about the Cavs moving Dennis Schroder to clear room for Jonathan Kuminga. Cleveland already finished fourth in the East last season. Add LeBron and this team is a real contender.
Indiana still has Tyrese Haliburton. If he bounces back to form, the Pacers are in the mix too.
The point is this: the Eastern Conference got deeper while the Knicks ran it back. That’s not necessarily the wrong move. Continuity matters, and New York still has room to add one more veteran minimum contract. They will likely use it on a defensive-minded big man. But the margin for error just shrank dramatically.
The Knicks are the champs. But the target on their back got bigger and the shooters got better.
