Brian Windhorst Says LeBron James Free Agency Isn’t a Lock for Cleveland. Here’s Why.

LeBron James is still unsigned a week into NBA free agency, and the rumors are flying. But ESPN’s Brian Windhorst just threw some cold water on the idea that Cleveland is the obvious landing spot.

Appearing on ESPN Cleveland, Windhorst said he’s hearing chatter from multiple cities — not just Cleveland — and one source even claimed the deal is done somewhere else already. Windhorst stopped short of naming names, but he made it clear the situation is fluid.

“I’m hearing stuff in other cities too. I’m not gonna say who, but I had somebody on the phone with me today that I consider a good source who was swearing it’s a done deal in another city a couple hours ago,” Windhorst said. “I am being very, very cautious. Right now it’s too scattered. I also know how LeBron has operated, they’ve kept their circle very tight.”

He added that every rumor carries some logic, but also some nonsense. “Cleveland is not the only place where there are rumors.”

The other teams in the mix

Besides the Cavaliers, the Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, and Golden State Warriors have all been linked to James. At 41 years old, he’s about to enter his 24th NBA season — something no player has ever done.

James still played 60 games last season, averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists in just over 33 minutes a night. His shooting numbers weren’t elite from deep (31.7 percent from three), but he’s still a threat on the floor. It’s not the peak LeBron production we’ve seen before, but it’s not far off for a guy old enough to have teammates who weren’t born when he entered the league.

What this means for Cavs fans

Cleveland has cap space and a young core that could use a veteran leader, but Windhorst’s comments suggest the Cavs shouldn’t assume anything. James has a history of keeping his circle tight and making decisions on his own timeline. The fact that multiple teams believe they’re in play — and one source swears it’s a done deal somewhere else — means this could drag out.

For now, the rumor mill is spinning. And Windhorst, who has covered James for years, is telling people to pump the brakes on any one outcome. That’s probably the smartest take in a room full of guesses.
