Senegal is staring at an early exit from the 2026 World Cup. They lost 3-2 to Norway in New Jersey on Tuesday, a game that felt like a microcosm of their tournament so far. Lots of fight, not enough finishing. But one guy showed up.
Ismaila Sarr scored twice. The Crystal Palace winger now has three goals this summer, which ties him with the late Papa Bouba Diop for the most goals by a Senegalese player in men’s World Cup history. Diop scored three across the 2002 and 2006 tournaments. Sarr has matched that in two group games. The difference? Diop’s goals helped Senegal reach the quarterfinals in 2002. Sarr’s might not even get them out of the group stage.
That’s the part that stings.
How Senegal got here
Norway came in as the supposed dark horse, mostly because they have Erling Haaland. He scored again, obviously. Haaland now has four goals in two games. Senegal fell behind 2-0 early, clawed back to 2-2 thanks to Sarr’s first brace of the tournament, then conceded a winner in the 78th minute. You could feel the air leave the stadium.
Senegal’s path to the knockout round is now narrow. They need a big win over Iraq on the final matchday and some help from other results to sneak through as one of the best third-place teams. It’s possible. But it’s not comfortable.
The Sarr-Diop connection
Papa Bouba Diop died in 2020 at 42. Most casual fans remember him as the guy who scored the game’s only goal against France in the 2002 opener, the one that announced Senegal as a real threat. But for Senegalese fans, he was more than that. He was the standard. He played in three World Cups, scored in two of them, and became a symbol of the country’s rise in international soccer.
Sarr is now in that conversation. He’s 28, in his prime, and he’s been Senegal’s best attacking player this month. He’s fast. He’s direct. He finishes chances that others might pass up. But records only matter when they’re attached to something bigger, and right now Senegal is fighting just to play another game.
Iraq isn’t a guaranteed win, either. They’ve been compact and physical. Senegal has the talent advantage but hasn’t shown the composure to match it.
One more game. One more chance for Sarr to make his own history instead of just matching someone else’s.
