With a 27-39 record and a 5.5-game deficit in the American League Wild Card race, sources close to the organization say the front office is quietly preparing for a dramatic pivot — one that could send shockwaves through the trade market.
While most of the baseball world has its eyes locked on two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal as the potential crown jewel of the Aug. 3 deadline, insiders are buzzing about a different name: right-hander Casey Mize. According to MLB.com’s Jason Beck, Mize is the “sneaky” trade chip that could actually generate more league-wide frenzy than his more famous teammate.
“Yeah, we get it, Tarik Skubal will be the biggest name in baseball around the Deadline. But if the Tigers indeed end up becoming sellers, Mize is a sneaky name to watch,” Beck wrote, sending a ripple through front offices around the league.
Mize, the former No. 1 overall pick out of Springville, Alabama, has reportedly been dazzling evaluators with a 2.27 ERA, 49 strikeouts, a 0.965 WHIP, and a .572 OPS against over 47 2/3 innings in 2026.
