The Detroit Tigers appear to be staring down a crossroads that could reshape their franchise for years to come. With a 27-39 record and a 5.5-game deficit in the American League Wild Card race, sources close to the organization say the front office is quietly preparing for a dramatic pivot — one that could send shockwaves through the trade market.
While most of the baseball world has its eyes locked on two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal as the potential crown jewel of the Aug. 3 deadline, insiders are buzzing about a different name: right-hander Casey Mize. According to MLB.com’s Jason Beck, Mize is the “sneaky” trade chip that could actually generate more league-wide frenzy than his more famous teammate.
“Yeah, we get it, Tarik Skubal will be the biggest name in baseball around the Deadline. But if the Tigers indeed end up becoming sellers, Mize is a sneaky name to watch,” Beck wrote, sending a ripple through front offices around the league.
Mize, the former No. 1 overall pick out of Springville, Alabama, has reportedly been dazzling evaluators with a 2.27 ERA, 49 strikeouts, a 0.965 WHIP, and a .572 OPS against over 47 2/3 innings in 2026. One rival scout who spoke on condition of anonymity told us: “If he stays healthy, he’s arguably the second-most coveted arm available — maybe even league-wide.”
But here’s the catch that has Tigers insiders reportedly sweating: Mize is currently on his second injured list stint of the season after re-aggravating an abductor issue in late May. Sources say the same health questions that shadow Skubal could dramatically depress the return package for Mize.
Still, according to a team insider, “Scott Harris has a track record of being patient but ruthless when the right deal comes along. If someone blows him away with an offer, Mize is gone.”
All of this remains hypothetical, of course. The Tigers — who open a home series against the Minnesota Twins (30-37) — are reportedly determined to claw back into contention. But with each loss, the pressure mounts, and the whispers grow louder: a blockbuster trade might be Detroit’s real path forward.
