The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly making some aggressive roster moves as they barrel toward what many insiders believe could be Aaron Rodgers’ final ride. With the legendary quarterback reportedly planning to hang it up after the 2026 season, the front office is leaving no stone unturned — and that apparently includes cutting a promising young offensive lineman before he even got a real shot at training camp.
Abrupt End for a Depth Lineman
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Steelers have officially parted ways with offensive lineman Aiden Williams. The 25-year-old guard originally signed a reserve/futures deal with Pittsburgh back in January, but sources close to the team say his release just ahead of the final OTA practice on Friday, June 12th, has some observers wondering if something bigger is brewing behind the scenes.
Williams, who played college ball at Minnesota Duluth from 2019 through 2024, went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft. He initially signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent but was waived on August 25th of last year before landing on the practice squad. He was let go again after final cuts on September 3rd. A brief stint on Carolina’s practice squad in October lasted just one week before he was released once more.
Fast-forward to January 2026, and Williams inked another reserve/futures deal with Pittsburgh. He survived into the offseason program but, according to reports, did not make the final cut just as OTAs were wrapping up. One insider told us that the timing of the move “raised a few eyebrows” because Williams was reportedly showing flashes of potential during drills.
More Moves on the Way?
Williams is far from the only player getting the boot before camp. The Steelers also released wide receiver Brandon Johnson on June 9th, creating room to claim punter Aidan Laros off waivers from the Buccaneers. That transaction, combined with Williams’ release, has fueled speculation that Pittsburgh might be clearing cap space or roster spots for a bigger-name addition.
“Nobody expected them to cut a young O-lineman with decent upside just days before OTAs ended,” one league source said. “It could mean they’re about to sign a veteran, or maybe they’re making room for a trade. Either way, it’s a sign the Steelers are in win-now mode.”
Training camp is still set to kick off in late July, so the team has plenty of time to tinker. But with Rodgers’ looming retirement casting a long shadow over the season, fans and analysts alike are buzzing about whether Pittsburgh is truly all-in or just reshuffling deck chairs.
