Sean Payton’s Past May Force a Broncos Trade for Saints QB Spencer Rattler

The Denver Broncos may be quietly preparing for a seismic shift behind center — and it has nothing to do with Bo Nix. While the second-year signal-caller is reportedly locked in as the team’s starter for the foreseeable future, sources close to the situation claim that Sean Payton’s deep-rooted connections to the New Orleans Saints could spark a surprising trade that shakes up the quarterback room in Mile High.

According to multiple reports, the Saints have anointed rookie Tyler Shough as their QB1, leaving former starter Spencer Rattler as the odd man out. And with Payton — the man who orchestrated New Orleans’ offense for 16 seasons — still pulling strings in Denver, insiders say the Broncos are a “natural fit” for Rattler, should he become available.

“The Broncos brought in Zach Wilson this offseason, but that doesn’t mean they’re done tinkering,” one league insider told us, speaking on condition of anonymity. “If Rattler is on the block, Payton knows exactly what he’d be getting — a guy with starting experience who could develop into more.”

A Backup Crisis Waiting to Happen?

As it stands, Denver’s backup QB depth chart features Jared Stidham and Sam Ehlinger — two players who have combined for just a handful of meaningful NFL snaps. While the team might enter the season with that duo, sources say training camp performances could change everything. If either Stidham or Ehlinger stumbles under the pressure of preseason reps, Payton may reportedly push for a more reliable safety net.

“Rattler started 14 games for the Saints and lost 13 of them — that’s not great,” the insider acknowledged. “But that experience, even the bad kind, is exactly what teams value when they’re looking for a backup who won’t panic. And at 25, his story isn’t written yet.”

What Would It Take?

For the Saints, trading Rattler would be a calculated gamble. Shough is the clear starter, but New Orleans’ backup situation isn’t exactly dire — they have Wilson, who offers similar raw athleticism and upside. If the front office feels comfortable with Wilson as the primary backup, they could look to flip Rattler for draft capital, especially with Payton potentially making a call.

“There are a lot of moving pieces here,” another source noted. “But if Sean wants him, the Saints will listen. The relationship is still strong — that’s not a bridge that burned when he left.”

While no deal is imminent, the talk around the league is growing louder. For now, all eyes are on Broncos training camp and whether the backup battle becomes dramatic enough to force Payton’s hand. If it does, this could be the trade that reshapes Denver’s quarterback room — and Rattler’s career — in a big way.
