“I Could Have Helped”: Harry Maguire Opens Up About FaceTime Ax from Thomas Tuchel for 2026 World Cup

Harry Maguire spent the second half of the season proving he still belonged at Manchester United. He won back his place under Michael Carrick, started 15 Premier League games, and forced INEOS to trigger a one-year extension. But when England manager Thomas Tuchel dialed his number this spring, the veteran defender learned that club form wasn’t enough to earn a seat on the plane to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Maguire, 33, was left off the Three Lions’ final roster — a decision he calls the hardest professional disappointment of his career. Speaking on Gary Lineker’s Rest is Football podcast, Maguire revealed the exact moment he found out.

Tuchel delivered the news over FaceTime.

“It was quite an awkward call,” Maguire said. “He FaceTimes everyone. It makes it harder for himself to see our reactions and things like that.” According to the defender, Tuchel sent a text asking to talk around 4 p.m., then called personally. “It is quite a unique way of doing it,” Maguire added. “He said he can’t really give me an excuse.”

The central defender told Tuchel immediately that he believed he’d done enough to earn a place. “I said straightaway I was really disappointed,” Maguire recalled. “I thought I could have helped and had a part to play on and off the pitch.” Tuchel explained that he was sticking with the four center-backs who carried England through qualifying.

That justification didn’t soften the blow.

“It was tough to take,” Maguire said. “I did really well in both games in the March camp under him for the first time, then went back to Manchester United and finished the season really strongly.” The 33-year-old acknowledged that he understood the manager’s difficult position but felt his experience warranted a place regardless of role.

“I’m quite a big personality. I’m experienced,” Maguire said. “I was really disappointed. I wanted to go to the World Cup and play. I’m 33 now, 37 at the next World Cup — it looks far away. I told the manager I wasn’t demanding to go and start the games. I would have been happy to play one minute as long as I’m there with the lads.”

For England, Maguire has been a staple on the biggest stages. He started all but one group game during the 2018 World Cup run to the semifinals, scoring and assisting along the way. He played every minute of the 2022 tournament in Qatar, helping the Three Lions reach the quarterfinals. Those credentials, according to the player, should have counted for something.

The snub means Maguire will spend the summer resting instead of competing on the world stage — a development that Manchester United may quietly celebrate. He’ll join preseason on schedule, fully fit, and with something to prove. Carrick’s side faces a packed 2026-27 campaign, and having a motivated veteran at the back could be a significant advantage.

Maguire’s social media frustration after the initial exclusion prompted a direct response from Tuchel, but the defender says he harbors no personal grudge. He just wishes he’d had a chance to share one more run with the team.
