How a Relegated West Ham Could Hand Man United a £50M Dutch Winger

It’s not every day that a team dropping to the Championship sets the table for a Champions League club’s transfer business. But here we are. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Manchester United have identified West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville as a primary target—and the numbers involved explain why this story has legs.

West Ham’s slide to the second tier after a disastrous season has left the London Stadium in financial disarray. Estimates suggest the club could be staring at a revenue hole of around £150 million. Add in the resignation of chairman David Sullivan earlier this month following a joint BBC Panorama and Times investigation, and the picture gets even murkier. The Hammers are under pressure to sell, and United know it.

Summerville, 24, is under contract until June 2029, but sources indicate a fee in the region of £50 million could get a deal done. That’s a significant chunk of change, but for a player who can operate on either wing or through the middle, the price tag is within range for a club like United that is preparing for a return to the Champions League under Michael Carrick.

More Than Just a Winger

The Dutch international turned heads in the World Cup opener against Japan. Starting on the right for Ronald Koeman, Summerville scored a lovely goal in the 2-2 draw. That versatility—right, left, or central—is exactly what United’s recruitment team values. INEOS has prioritized players with flexible skill sets who can adapt across multiple positions. Summerville fits that mold.

His resume also includes a Championship Player of the Year award with Leeds United just two years ago. That kind of proven form in English football reduces the risk factor, something United’s front office has been keen to minimize after a few high-cost misfires in recent windows.

United’s Double Swoop on East London

Summerville isn’t the only name linked to a move from West Ham to Old Trafford. Reports have also connected United with midfielder Mateus Fernandes. Talks with the 21-year-old Portugal international are said to be advancing, though the two clubs remain apart on an asking price that could reach around £65 million. If both deals get across the line, United would be pulling off a double raid on East London that adds quality and depth in key areas.

El Hadji Malick Diouf, West Ham’s attacking full-back, has been mentioned as a potential understudy for Luke Shaw. Captain Jarrod Bowen is also on United’s radar as a reliable goal-scoring option up top. But it’s Summerville who Ornstein says is drawing “serious attention” from United’s recruitment team.

Ornstein’s report confirms that United have already inquired about the winger’s situation. The asking price of around £50 million is steep for a player from a relegated side, but the market for wingers with Summerville’s blend of experience, youth, and international pedigree is only going up. United are one of several teams monitoring the situation, and given the financial realities at West Ham, this story is unlikely to fade quietly.

The question now is whether United will move quickly or wait to see if the price drops. With a Champions League campaign looming, Carrick’s squad needs reinforcements. Summerville could be the first piece of a busy summer in M16.
