Haaland’s World Cup Run Ends, But Norway’s Viking King Left a Mark That Won’t Fade

Erling Haaland walked off the pitch in Miami on Saturday night knowing he’d just played his last game of the 2026 World Cup. Norway fell 2-1 to England in the quarterfinals, and with that, one of the tournament’s most compelling stories came to a close.

But the reaction afterward wasn’t about the loss. It was about what Haaland did for a country of fewer than six million people. He dragged Norway to its best-ever World Cup finish: a quarterfinal appearance. He scored seven goals in six games. He turned a team that wasn’t supposed to be here into a global talking point.

And the internet, as it tends to do with stars of his magnitude, gave him his flowers.

“Erling Haaland you can hold your head high this World Cup tournament. Took this Norway team to a quarter final and made history by scoring seven goals,” one fan posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

ESPN called him the “God of Goals” and noted that Norway had never reached this stage before. Fox Sports posted a graphic of Haaland with a Viking helmet, captioning it: “A Viking’s journey ends. The pride Erling Haaland gave Norway this FIFA World Cup will never fade.”

The Instagram bump and a Google tribute

Haaland’s profile grew even bigger over the past month. Bleacher Report noted that his Instagram followers jumped by 22 million during the tournament. Two days before the England match, Google ran a personalized tribute for him — a sign of how far his reach extends beyond the pitch.

Still, not everything went smoothly. Norway’s coaching staff made a decision that drew sharp criticism from fans and analysts alike. With extra time winding down and Norway still chasing an equalizer, they pulled Haaland off the field.

Former NFL quarterback turned media personality Robert Griffin III did not hold back. “Taking Haaland off the pitch in extra time when you are fighting for your World Cup life is certainly a choice. AN ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE DECISION,” Griffin posted on X.

The decision didn’t cost Norway the game — England had already taken control. But it raised questions about what might have been if Haaland had stayed on.

What this run means for Norway and Haaland

This was Haaland’s first World Cup, and he turned it into a showcase. Seven goals in six games is elite company. He led a squad that no one picked to make noise and turned them into a team people will remember.

Norway is out. England moves on to the semifinals. But for Haaland, this tournament was a statement. He arrived as a superstar. He leaves as a legend in his country’s history.

The Viking Row chant echoed in stadiums across America. That won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
