Haaland Just Became Norway’s All-Time World Cup Scorer in Style

Erling Haaland is making his first World Cup look like just another Tuesday. The Norwegian striker scored twice against Senegal on Monday night, and in the process he became the country’s all-time leading scorer in the tournament.

That’s four goals in two games for a guy who had never played a World Cup match before this month. Not bad for a debut.

Norway came into this tournament as a team that hadn’t qualified since 1998. Haaland basically dragged them here himself, topping their UEFA qualifying group and booking a ticket to the big show. Now that he’s here, he’s not wasting any time.

Another night, another brace

Haaland opened his World Cup account with two goals in Norway’s 4-1 win over Iraq. Then came Senegal. Norway was up 1-0 at halftime, and Haaland made it 2-0 in the 48th minute with a finish that looked almost too easy. Senegal answered back five minutes later to make it 2-1, but Haaland wasn’t interested in a close game. He scored again in the 58th minute, a sharp strike that beat the keeper and pushed Norway’s lead to 3-1.

That goal was his fourth of the tournament. That moved him past whoever held the previous record for Norway at the World Cup. According to BBC News, he’s now the sole leader in that category. Not bad company for someone who’s still 25 years old.

Haaland has been doing this at Manchester City for years now — scoring at a rate that borders on absurd. But the World Cup is different. It’s the stage where legends get cemented in the public imagination, not just in the stats sheets. And Haaland is treating it like a personal highlight reel.

Norway’s World Cup hopes

With two wins in two games, Norway is in great shape to advance out of the group stage. That would be a massive deal for a nation that hasn’t made it past the group stage since… well, since they last qualified in 1998. The team looks dangerous, and Haaland is obviously the centerpiece. But it’s not just him. The midfield is creating chances, the defense is holding up, and the confidence is clearly there.

Senegal pushed back, which is what you’d expect from a team that’s been to the knockout rounds before. But Norway answered every time. That says something about this squad’s mentality.

The next match will tell us more. But right now, Haaland is putting on a show, and Norway is along for the ride.
