Giannis Antetokounmpo stood at the podium in Miami on Thursday and did not waste time making it clear why he pushed for a trade to the Heat. The two-time MVP, now 31, said he wants another championship and believes Miami gives him the best shot.
Antetokounmpo was traded from Milwaukee after months of speculation. At his introductory press conference, he talked about being uncomfortable, about needing pressure, and about watching the Heat’s Big Three era as a kid who barely knew the NBA existed.
“I just enjoy basketball, I enjoy the challenge, I enjoy getting better,” Antetokounmpo said. “Obviously, I’ve accomplished a lot of things in my career. But one of my goals is to win another championship, and I really want to do it. At times, whenever I put my mind into something, I usually accomplish it. I feel like this is the best route for me to do that. So I’m excited for it.”
Why Miami’s Culture Pulled Him In
The Bucks won it all in 2021. Antetokounmpo put up 35.2 points, 13.2 rebounds and five assists per game in that Finals sweep of Phoenix. But since then, Milwaukee has fallen short in the playoffs while Miami kept making deep runs with less star power on paper.
Antetokounmpo admitted he always wondered what made the Heat different.
“I think from the first battle we had, and from the first years I played in the NBA, I always had huge respect for the Miami Heat organization,” he said. “And around the league, we as players, we speak, we talk. And you always share about the Miami Heat culture, and that guys work hard, very disciplined, very driven, and guys are very selfless and give everything that they can to win games.”
He talked about trying to build something similar in Milwaukee, about leaving families behind for a common goal. But he admitted that watching the Heat’s Big Three era — LeBron, Wade, Bosh — shaped how he sees the game.
“I saw that Miami when I started playing basketball, I think the Big Three was around 2010, 11, 12, 13,” Antetokounmpo said. “I think those are the years. Prior to that, I’m not gonna lie, I never watched the NBA, so I didn’t know much. But I kind of grew up under that era, so I know the expectations that this team has. I love pressure.”
Pressure. That’s the Word He Kept Coming Back To.
Antetokounmpo said getting out of his comfort zone was the whole point. Miami, with coach Erik Spoelstra and a roster that always seems to overachieve in the playoffs, represents a fresh start for a player who has done just about everything individually but wants more rings.
“Coach Spo talked about pressure, and I think I thrive under pressure,” he said. “I think I need pressure at this time of my career. I think in order for me to go to the next level, I got to get out of my comfort zone, and I feel like Miami was the place for me to be. We are very like-minded as a team, and it was a no-brainer. I wanted to be here. I’m excited to be here, and I just want to get to work.”
The Heat have won three championships since entering the league in 1988 and have been to seven Finals. Adding a player of Antetokounmpo’s caliber — still in his prime, still dominant — immediately shifts the balance of power in the Eastern Conference. The team is expected to make more moves this offseason to build around him.
But for now, the message from Miami is clear. Giannis is here. He wants to win. And he thinks this is the place to do it.
