Anthony Edwards Fed Karl-Anthony Towns Wemby Intel Before Every Finals Game

Anthony Edwards might not have been on the court in the NBA Finals, but he was in Karl-Anthony Towns’ ear the whole time.

The Timberwolves star admitted this week that he acted as an unofficial scout for his former teammate during New York’s championship series against the Spurs. Edwards, speaking onstage at Fanatics Fest in New York, said he gave Towns inside information on Victor Wembanyama and other San Antonio players before every game.

“I was talking to him before every game because we play San Antonio,” Edwards said. “So, giving him little tips and stuff on which players like to go which way, you know, stuff about Wemby. So yeah, I gave him a little cheat code.”

Why Edwards Had the Goods

It makes sense. Edwards and the Timberwolves faced the Spurs three times this season, including the NBA Cup final. That gave him a much closer look at Wembanyama and San Antonio’s schemes than the Knicks got in just two regular-season meetings. So Edwards passed along whatever he noticed.

Towns and the Knicks beat the Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 to win the series 4-1. It was New York’s first title in 53 years. And Edwards was apparently wide awake for the celebration.

“I was turned up. It may have been like 3 in the morning when he FaceTimed me after the game,” Edwards said. “So yeah, I gave him a little cheat code, and he passed the test. Shoutout Cap.”

Towns Returned the Favor

Towns didn’t forget to credit Edwards publicly. In his postgame interview, he shouted out the guy he spent four seasons with in Minnesota. They reached the Western Conference Finals together before the Timberwolves traded Towns to the Knicks the following summer. The bond never faded.

“Shoutout to my brother Anthony Edwards, talking to him all the time,” Towns said. “Those guys made me better. Made me a better leader, made me a better player, made me the man I am today. Forever grateful for them.”

That trade stung Edwards at first. But two years later, the friendship still includes a championship assist. Edwards didn’t get a ring, but he got a FaceTime call at 3 a.m. That counts for something.
