Gary O’Neil is officially back in the Premier League. Ipswich Town announced Tuesday they’ve hired the 43-year-old as their new manager, handing him a three-year deal to lead the club into its return to the top flight.
The Tractor Boys needed a replacement after Kieran McKenna left following his second promotion with the club. McKenna got them out of League One, then straight through the Championship and into the Premier League. That’s a tough act to follow, but O’Neil isn’t walking into this blind. He’s done it before.
A Familiar Story for O’Neil
O’Neil got Bournemouth promoted to the Premier League back in 2022. He kept them up too, which is more than a lot of newly promoted managers can say. Then came a stint at Wolves where things went sideways — he was fired in December 2024 with the team near the relegation zone. After that, he took over at Strasbourg in France, replacing Liam Rosenior. That lasted a few months. Now he’s back in England, back in the league where he’s most comfortable.
“It is an honour to be appointed Manager of this great football club,” O’Neil said. “I have followed the progress the club has made over the last few years closely and to now have the opportunity to lead Ipswich Town in the Premier League is something I am hugely excited by.”
The Challenge Ahead
Ipswich’s schedule to start the season is brutal. They open at home against Sunderland on August 22, then travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United, and then host Liverpool. No easing into things. O’Neil knows what he signed up for though. He’s been here before.
“There is a strong vision and ambition at this club and I am fully aware of the responsibility that brings, given how much it means to its supporters and to the community of Ipswich and Suffolk,” he added. “We all know the challenge ahead as we prepare for the season together and I’m excited to meet everyone and get to work.”
The question nobody’s answered yet is whether O’Neil can keep a team up twice. He did it once at Bournemouth with a squad that overperformed. At Wolves, the wheels came off. Ipswich is betting the version of him that showed up on the south coast is the real one.
Portman Road is going to be loud on opening day. That much is guaranteed. Everything else is a wait-and-see.
