Frederik Andersen Signed with Edmonton and Made His Goal Clear: He Wants Back-to-Back Cups

The Edmonton Oilers didn’t just sign a veteran goalie this week. They signed one who just won the Stanley Cup and has no intention of slowing down.

Frederik Andersen, fresh off a championship run with the Carolina Hurricanes, agreed to a one-year deal with the Oilers. And at 36 years old, he could have walked away. Instead, he chose Edmonton. Why? Because this team is right there.

“Edmonton has been knocking on the door for a while now, it’s a team that’s got aspirations to try to win,” Andersen said Monday, via NHL.com. “They’ve been close and it would be awesome to help them get over the hump. I’m really excited about that opportunity.”

The Oilers have been knocking, all right. They made the Stanley Cup Final in both 2024 and 2025, losing to the Florida Panthers each time. Last year they got bounced in the first round. That kind of early exit stings when you’ve been that close. So this summer, Edmonton went to work on its biggest weakness: goaltending.

Andersen’s signing is part of a larger overhaul. The Oilers also traded for 24-year-old Devon Levi from the Buffalo Sabres on July 1. Levi is young, talented, and comes with upside. Andersen brings the steady hand of a guy who’s been through it all.

Andersen spent five seasons with Carolina, playing 159 regular-season games with a .906 save percentage. In the playoffs, he appeared in 48 games and posted a .909 save percentage. The Hurricanes made three Eastern Conference Finals with him in net. And last season, they finally broke through for the Cup.

That ring was the first of Andersen’s career. Winning it at 35 could have been the perfect ending. But he thinks he’s got more left.

So now he’ll try to make it two in a row. The 2027 season is a long way off, but Andersen isn’t hiding what he wants. He’s coming to Edmonton to help them finish the job.
