Alabama just poached another recruit from a rival’s commitment list, and this one stings a little more for the Commodores. On Friday, four-star cornerback Braylen Gibbs out of Knoxville Catholic announced he’s switching his pledge from Vanderbilt to the Crimson Tide. It’s a flip that Vanderbilt fans had to see coming, even if they didn’t want to admit it.
Gibbs had been committed to Vanderbilt since December 2025. But the pull of Tuscaloosa is real. He visited Alabama multiple times, including the A-Day spring game in April and another unofficial trip just last weekend. After that, the decision was basically made. Alabama offered him on March 11, and Kalen DeBoer’s staff kept the pressure on until they got the yes.
Gibbs is 6-foot-2, around 170 to 175 pounds, which is legit size for a cornerback at this stage in his development. He’s ranked by Rivals as the No. 257 overall player in the 2028 class, the No. 25 cornerback in the country, and the No. 13 prospect in Tennessee regardless of position. 247Sports also lists him as a four-star and calls him the No. 13 athlete in his class. So he’s not just a guy. He’s a real get.
His offer list is stacked. Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Miami. That’s not a group of programs that miss on talent often. Gibbs chose Alabama over all of them. That says something about where DeBoer’s pitch is landing right now.
Gibbs becomes the third member of Alabama’s 2028 class, joining linebacker Dustin Henry from Baltimore’s St. Francis Academy (committed in June) and quarterback Charles Scott Jr. from Richmond, Virginia. More importantly, he’s the first defensive back in this class. That fills a clear need for a program that wants to lock down the secondary for years to come.
The flip is also a reminder that recruiting battles don’t end when a player commits. They just pause. Vanderbilt had Gibbs locked up for months, but Alabama kept chipping away. Now the Crimson Tide have another win in the Southeast, and they’ve got a Tennessee kid who’s willing to cross state lines to play for them. Not bad for a program that’s still figuring out its identity under a relatively new head coach.
Gibbs is expected to enroll at Alabama in 2028. His size and length suggest he could develop into a press-man corner who can match up with the bigger receivers in the SEC. But that’s a few years away. For now, DeBoer and his staff just added another piece to a foundation that’s starting to look pretty solid.
