FIFA Tosses Belgium’s Appeal on Balogun. He’s Playing Tonight.

Folarin Balogun is officially available for the USMNT against Belgium in the World Cup round of 16. FIFA’s Appeal Committee shot down the Belgian Football Association’s challenge to his eligibility, calling the whole thing inadmissible. The decision came down just hours before kickoff, which is pretty much the last possible moment for this kind of thing.

Belgium tried to argue that Balogun shouldn’t be allowed to suit up for the United States. But FIFA’s ruling basically said the Belgian FA had no legal standing to make that appeal in the first place. The committee’s statement was direct: the RBFA is not a party to the proceedings, so they don’t get to appeal.

This ends a few days of genuine uncertainty around the striker. Mauricio Pochettino can now slot Balogun into the squad without worrying about a late eligibility headache. And given how tight knockout games tend to go, having a player of his quality available is a real boost for the U.S. attack.

Trump Called Infantino. Infantino Said It Didn’t Matter.

Earlier on Monday, President Donald Trump mentioned during a White House press conference that he had spoken directly with FIFA president Gianni Infantino about the appeal. That raised some eyebrows. But Infantino quickly put out his own statement emphasizing that FIFA’s judicial bodies operate independently. Basically, he made it clear that a phone call from a head of state wasn’t going to sway the committee.

The timing of Trump’s involvement felt a little weird. But Infantino’s response seemed designed to make sure nobody thought FIFA was playing favorites. He said the judicial bodies apply the disciplinary code based on regulations and facts, not external pressure.

What This Means for the Match

Balogun trained with the team all week while this thing hung in the air. Now he’s locked in. Belgium, meanwhile, has to deal with a U.S. side that kept its best striker option. For a knockout game, that’s a huge swing. The U.S. midfield looked solid in the group stage, but the attack needed a finisher. Balogun is that guy.

Belgium’s argument was reportedly based on some earlier FIFA ruling about Balogun’s national team switch. But the committee didn’t even get to the merits of it. They just ruled the Belgian federation had no standing. So the whole appeal was dead on arrival.

Kickoff is tonight. Balogun is expected to start or come off the bench. Either way, he’s in the building and eligible. That’s the only thing that matters now.
