FIFA Is Giving Out Championship Rings Now. Yes, Like the Super Bowl.

Argentina and Spain are set to play for the 2026 World Cup on Sunday, but the real headline dropped two days before kickoff. FIFA announced it will award championship rings to the winners for the first time in the tournament’s history.

Thirty custom rings for the players and coaches. Another 1,996 will be sold to fans. Each one comes with a miniature World Cup trophy on top and an inscription on the band. They’re individually numbered, custom-fitted, and shipped with a certificate of authenticity. The captain and head coach will get temporary rings right after the final, then the real ones come later once every detail is dialed in.

This is a straight lift from American sports. The Super Bowl has done it for years. NBA Finals champions get rings. Now soccer has that too, at least at the highest level.

FIFA’s statement called it “a momentous first for a FIFA competition” and said it brings “one of the most recognizable American sporting traditions to the global game.” That’s the official line anyway. Fans online had predictably mixed reactions. Some loved it. Some called it gimmicky. A few pointed out that FIFA already has a trophy and medals, so rings feel like overkill. But FIFA doesn’t do anything small.

Trump Will Be There Too

President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the final at the New York/New Jersey Stadium. According to reports, he also has some kind of special role at the tournament finals, though details are vague. He hasn’t been to any of the other 102 World Cup games so far. Not the U.S. men’s matches. Not the semifinals. Nothing.

The Game Itself

Argentina is looking for back-to-back titles after Lionel Messi lifted the trophy in Qatar in 2022. Spain under Rodri hasn’t won a World Cup since 2010, when they beat the Netherlands in extra time. Both teams have been sharp all tournament. Both have fan bases that travel. The stadium will be loud.
