Manchester United have their eyes on Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha, and it’s easy to see why. The 25-year-old German international put together a solid campaign last season — 42 appearances, five goals, three assists across all competitions. That’s not flashy numbers, but his game isn’t really about counting stats.
According to The Athletic’s Transfer DealSheet, United have identified Nmecha as a real target this summer. The question is whether they can actually pull it off. His contract at Signal Iduna Park runs through 2030, so Dortmund aren’t exactly in a rush to sell. That means if United want him, they’ll have to pay up.
What Nmecha brings to the table
He’s a box-to-box midfielder who can also slot in as a defensive or attacking mid depending on what the manager needs. Nmecha wins tackles, reads the game well in his own half, and has a decent long-range shot. He’s also got the kind of energy that fits the Premier League’s pace — at least on paper.
But there’s always a question with Bundesliga midfielders making the jump to England. The league is different. Faster, more physical, less time on the ball. Nmecha is 25 now, which is sort of the sweet spot. Old enough to know his game, young enough to adapt. Still, it’s not a guarantee.
For Michael Carrick, this feels like the kind of move that makes sense. United’s midfield needs depth. They’ve got some pieces, but not a ton of reliable options behind the starters. Nmecha would walk into a competition for minutes immediately. And at his age, he’s entering his prime years. That’s a decent bet for a club that’s trying to get back into trophy contention.
The big question is whether United can move fast enough. Other clubs will be watching. Dortmund don’t need to sell. And Nmecha might want to see if anything bigger comes along. But if Carrick pushes for this early, he could lock down a midfielder who fits what he’s trying to build.
Nothing’s done yet. The window is still open. But this is one to watch.
