NBA The Run is coming in 2026, and the arcade-style 3v3 game is leaning hard into flashy, game-changing mechanics. The biggest one? Zone Abilities. Every character has a unique one, and they can swing a possession or a whole match if you know what you’re doing.
There are 12 Zone Abilities total, and they range from straight stat boosts to weird, specialized tricks that completely change how you defend or handle the ball. We broke them all down here so you don’t have to hunt through menus trying to figure out who does what.
What Each Zone Ability Does and Who Has It
Rocket Man — No energy drain when you sprint, plus a speed boost. Ja Morant and Tyrese Maxey both have it. If you like playing fast and never letting off the gas, this is your pick.
Amped Up — Bumps your speed, stamina, power, and jump height all at once. Donovan Mitchell, Paolo Banchero, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are the guys here. It’s a generalist buff that makes you a little better at everything.
Going Off — All your offensive ratings get a lift: shots, dunks, passes, and handles. Jayson Tatum, Cade Cunningham, Kevin Durant ’07, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander ’18, and LeBron James have it. If you’re the primary scorer, this is your go-to.
Lock Down — Defensive stats go up across the board: steals, blocks, shove, and guard. Amen Thompson, Bam Adebayo, Cooper Flagg, and Kawhi Leonard run this one. Shuts down isolations hard.
Paint Patrol — Better blocking and a longer posterize knockdown effect (1.5x time). Victor Wembanyama, Scottie Barnes, Anthony Davis, and Anthony Edwards use it. Anyone driving the lane is getting sent.
Posterizer — Higher dunk rating and the same extended knockdown on posters. Zion Williamson, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and LeBron James ’03 have it. Dunk on someone and they stay on the floor longer.
Dropping Dimes — Pass rating and speed go up, and whoever catches the ball gets a shot boost. Trae Young, Shen Tong, LaMelo Ball, Luka Doncic, Josh Giddey, and Tyrese Haliburton. It’s a team-play ability that rewards smart passing.
Deep Threat — Shrinks the distance and guard penalty on jump shots. Destiny Jackson, Devin Booker, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Damian Lillard. Step back from deep with less worry about shot contests.
The Shadow — Higher guard rating and range, and you don’t need to be in guard stance to affect the ball handler. Only El Gigante has it. It’s a weird one — basically lets you play defense without committing to a stance.
Pickpocket — More steals and a smaller penalty if you miss the steal attempt. Spin Cycle is the only character with this. High risk, high reward on ball pressure.
Ankle Breaker — Better handles and your base tricks can actually break defenders’ ankles. Bobbito Garcia, Jalen Brunson, Stephen Curry ’09, Luka Doncic ’18, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving. If you like embarrassing people in iso, this is it.
Glass Cleaner — Rebound and putback ratings both get a boost. Only Nikola Jokic has it. Grab boards and immediately score on the second chance.
How to Actually Use Zone Abilities in a Game
You can’t just pop these whenever you want. There’s a meter at the top of the screen called the “In The Zone” bar. It fills up as you play well — scoring, assists, blocks, steals, everything you’d normally do to win. Once it’s full, click both the left and right sticks at the same time to activate.
How often you get to use it depends on game length and how clean your team plays. I wouldn’t overthink the timing either. If the meter is full, just use it. Waiting for the perfect moment usually means you never use it at all. But if you’re playing with a buddy, coordinate your activations at the same time. Stacking two abilities can completely flip a possession.
That’s the full list. Best way to find your favorite is to just try a few characters and see which ability feels natural. Some click immediately. Others take a game or two to figure out.
