It’s not even August yet, and the New England Patriots are already getting some serious respect for one specific part of their roster. According to ESPN’s league-wide roster rankings for 2026, the Patriots’ secondary is the team’s most dangerous weapon.
Mike Clay, Aaron Schatz, and Seth Walder put together the projections. And Clay was blunt about where New England’s advantage lies.
He called the secondary the team’s biggest strength. That’s high praise considering the Patriots reached Super Bowl LX just a few months ago.
Why the secondary is getting this kind of buzz
Christian Gonzalez has turned into one of the NFL’s top young cornerbacks. That’s not hype anymore — it’s a fact at this point. And the Patriots went out and added Carlton Davis III on the perimeter, which gives them two legit outside corners who can travel with elite receivers.
Marcus Jones has developed into a real problem in the slot. Quick, physical, and smart. He’s the kind of piece that makes defensive coordinators sleep better at night.
Then there’s Kevin Byard. The veteran safety came over this offseason and immediately became the steady hand in the back end. Clay specifically noted that Byard is still playing at a high level at age 33. That’s not nothing. Safeties usually fall off around that age, but Byard has been durable and consistent.
Craig Woodson, a fourth-round find from last year’s draft, rounds out the safety group alongside Byard. So you’ve got young ascending talent and veteran leadership mixed together.
What this means for Mike Vrabel’s second season
Vrabel knows defense. That’s not a surprise to anyone who’s followed his career. Having a secondary this deep gives him flexibility up front. He can dial up pressure knowing the back end can hold up in man coverage.
The Patriots are trying to avoid a Super Bowl hangover this year. They made it to the big game last season and came up short. Now they’re trying to get back. If the secondary plays like ESPN expects, they’ve got a real shot.
Byard’s addition might be the under-the-radar move that pushes this defense over the top. We’ll see how it holds up in training camp. But right now, the outlook is pretty clear. The Patriots have one of the best secondaries in the league on paper. And that paper is about to hit the field.
