Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup planning is taking some serious hits. Reece James is out for England’s next two matches after tweaking his hamstring during the scoreless draw with Ghana in Boston, according to The Guardian. The Chelsea captain felt tightness in that same problematic muscle and missed Friday’s training session in Kansas City before the squad headed to New York for Saturday’s Group L finale against Panama.
He won’t play against Panama. And if England advance, he’ll miss the round of 32 tie too. Medical staff are being cautious, which makes sense given James’s long injury history. The 26-year-old only came back in May from a similar hamstring issue that sidelined him for almost two months back in March.
Tuchel’s Gamble at Right-Back Is Backfiring
Here’s the thing: Tuchel knew James was fragile and still started him for the full 90 minutes in both opening matches against Croatia and Ghana. That decision looks worse now. England already lost Tino Livramento to a calf injury before the tournament, and instead of calling in a natural right-back, Tuchel brought in Chelsea center-back Trevoh Chalobah.
So now the options are Jarell Quansah, Ezri Konsa or Djed Spence. Spence is the only actual fullback in that group, but he’s not at the level of someone like, say, Trent Alexander-Arnold. You know, the guy who stayed home while England now faces a Panama team that’s almost certainly going to sit deep and pack the box.
It’s a strange situation. Alexander-Arnold is probably England’s best weapon against a low block — his passing range and crossing ability can unlock defenses that park the bus. Instead, Tuchel might have to rely on a center-back playing out of position or Spence, who’s solid but not a game-changer going forward.
The Alexander-Arnold Question Keeps Getting Louder
Having Chalobah, Quansah or Konsa shift wide gives you defensive stability. But it also kills any attacking width or creativity from that side. If England struggles to break down Panama — and they’ve scored only once in two group games so far — people are going to ask why the country’s best creative right-back is watching from home.
Tuchel’s squad selection deserves scrutiny. He rolled the dice on James’s fitness and lost. He didn’t bring a like-for-like replacement. And now he’s stuck.
One more thing: Elliot Anderson is also dealing with muscle tightness and might miss the Panama match. That’s not related to any transfer to Manchester City, by the way — just an injury issue.
