Eddie Howe is done at Newcastle. The manager who ended the club’s 70-year trophy drought has told the brass he needs a break, and it sounds like he’s leaving now rather than later this summer.
The Athletic reported Thursday morning that Howe informed the club of his decision after a pre-season friendly loss to Championship side Bristol City on Wednesday night. That 4-1 defeat at Ashton Gate wasn’t the reason — it was probably just the last straw in a long, grinding season.
A Rough Year That Finally Caught Up
Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League last season. They made the Champions League round of 16 but got torched 8-3 on aggregate by Barcelona. They lost both legs of the Carabao Cup semifinals to Manchester City by a combined 5-1. City also knocked them out of the FA Cup in the fifth round. It was a slog.
The front office decided to stick with Howe after the season ended. But he’s had time to think this summer, and apparently he decided he’s spent. Five years at St. James’ Park is a long run in modern soccer, especially when you’ve already delivered the thing everybody wanted — a trophy.
That Carabao Cup win over Liverpool in 2025 is the reason fans will remember him fondly forever. The 4-1 demolition of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League group stage back in 2023 was probably the loudest night that stadium has ever had. He got them back into Europe’s top competition for the first time in two decades. Those things don’t go away.
Jaissle Is the Name Circulating
The early replacement buzz is about Matthias Jaissle. He’s the German coach currently running Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League. Before that he managed Red Bull Salzburg, where he won multiple Austrian titles and developed a reputation for attacking soccer and player development. He’s 37. He speaks English. He’s available for a conversation.
Newcastle hasn’t confirmed anything, obviously. But the timing lines up. Jaissle is young, ambitious, and probably looking for a way back to European soccer. Taking over a Premier League club with money and a fanbase that just got a taste of success — that’s a real opportunity.
The Roster Is in Flux
Whoever takes over will walk into a team that’s been gutted this summer. Alexander Isak left for Liverpool last year in a British record £125 million deal. Sandro Tonali is at Tottenham now. Anthony Gordon went to Barcelona. Bruno Guimaraes is expected to join Arsenal any day now.
Newcastle has brought in some younger pieces — Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba, Sean Steur, Ewen Jaouen — but those aren’t household names yet. The club missed European qualification entirely, which means more financial pressure to sell. The new manager won’t have the same squad Howe had two years ago.
Howe leaves as a club legend. But legends leave. Newcastle has to figure out what comes next, and they have to do it fast.
