The Toronto Maple Leafs just hired Daniel Alfredsson as an associate head coach. Yes, that Daniel Alfredsson. The guy who spent 17 seasons wearing a Senators jersey. The guy who is basically a walking statue in Ottawa.
This is the same offseason where Toronto already swapped out their GM, brought in a new head coach in Jim Hiller, and grabbed Sergei Bobrovsky in free agency. But this move feels different. It’s personal. Alfredsson spent the last three years as an assistant with the Senators and even worked behind the bench for Sweden at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Now he’s crossing the Battle of Ontario line.
Ottawa’s owner had thoughts
Senators owner Michael Andlauer put out a statement that basically said ‘we love you, Alfie, but we hate where you’re going.’ He called Alfredsson the embodiment of what it means to be a Senator and left the door open for a return someday. Which sounds nice, but let’s be real — watching your franchise icon put on a Leafs jacket is going to sting for a while.
Alfredsson was drafted 133rd overall by Ottawa in 1994. He showed up the next season and played all 82 games, putting up 26 goals and 35 assists. In total, he played 1,178 games for the Senators, scored 426 goals, and added 682 assists. That’s a Hall of Fame career by any measure. He spent one season with Detroit after leaving Ottawa, but he’ll always be a Senator in the history books. Just now he’s also a Leafs coach.
Two more assistants joined the staff
Toronto also brought in John Gruden and Brad Werenka as assistant coaches. Gruden was the head coach of the AHL Toronto Marlies and just led them to a Calder Cup last season. Werenka was an assistant at the University of Calgary and brings a background in analytics and player development.
Hiller said in a statement that Alfredsson’s experience and leadership speak for themselves. He praised Gruden for his work in the AHL and Werenka for mixing NHL playing experience with modern analytics. The whole staff is basically set now, and the Leafs can turn their attention to the 2026-27 season.
Preseason opens on September 19 against the Canadiens. The full regular season schedule drops this week. And somewhere in Ottawa, there’s probably a fan staring at an old Alfredsson jersey and trying to decide if they can still wear it.
