Crysencio Summerville wanted to be a Manchester United player. According to The Athletic, the Dutch winger made it clear to his representatives that Old Trafford was his first choice. But there was a catch — and it involved Marcus Rashford.
United made inquiries about Summerville earlier this summer. However, any deal was tied directly to moving Rashford off the books. The English forward had a $40 million exit clause in his contract, and it had an expiration date. That date came and went without the clause being activated. No one bit. And once that window closed, Summerville’s path to Manchester closed with it.
So his camp started looking elsewhere. And by elsewhere, I mean Saudi Arabia.
Tottenham Was in the Mix. Summerville Wasn’t Interested.
There was also interest from Tottenham. But Summerville reportedly had no desire to join Spurs out of respect for West Ham, the club he’d just been relegated with. His former teammate Mateus Fernandes made that same London switch a couple weeks ago, but Summerville wasn’t about to follow him.
He wanted to leave the Hammers on good terms even after they dropped to the Championship. And the money on offer in Saudi made that decision a whole lot easier.
West Ham agreed to sell Summerville to Al Hilal for around $65 million. The Netherlands international is set to earn roughly $15 million per year — that’s about $300,000 a week. For context, he was making less than $50,000 a week at West Ham. So yeah, the math checks out.
Could He Have Helped United or Spurs? Sure. But Not at That Price.
Summerville would have been a useful addition for either club. He’s quick, direct, and showed real flashes at Leeds before the move to West Ham. United’s attack could use another wide option. Spurs could too, honestly. But neither club was going to match what Al Hilal put on the table. That’s not a knock on them. That’s just the reality of the Saudi league right now.
Staying with West Ham wasn’t really an option either. The relegation changed everything. Summerville wanted a fresh start, and the Middle East offered that plus generational money.
He now joins a growing list of stars who’ve made the move to Saudi. He’ll be playing alongside some big names, and the pressure will be there to perform. But the money is locked in. And for a 24-year-old who was earning Championship-level wages a year ago, that’s a life-changing call.
United will move on. Rashford’s situation isn’t going away, and maybe the club circles back on a different winger next window. But for Summerville, the decision is made. He’s headed to Al Hilal.
