Bruno Guimaraes Told Newcastle He Wants Arsenal. Here’s What Happens Next.

Bruno Guimaraes has told Newcastle United he wants out this summer and Arsenal is his preferred destination, according to a new report from The Athletic. The Brazil international has reportedly made his intentions clear to club officials, and the Gunners are now moving to accelerate their pursuit of the midfielder.

This isn’t just a rumor floating around. Arsenal has already held initial talks with Guimaraes’ representatives to gauge his situation at St. James’ Park, Standard Sport reported last month. That was before Newcastle missed out on European qualification, which changed the calculus for a lot of players on that roster.

The Release Clause That Expired and the New Price Tag

Here’s where it gets complicated. Guimaraes signed a five-year extension back in October 2023 that included a temporary £100 million release clause. But that clause expired in June 2024 without anyone triggering it. So now there’s no set number.

Arsenal is willing to offer a package worth around £60 million, sources indicate. That’s a significant discount from that old trigger, but it also reflects the reality that Guimaraes has two years left on his deal and Newcastle has already been busy selling this summer.

The Magpies have recouped nearly £200 million already. Anthony Gordon went to Barcelona for £69.3 million. Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham in a deal that could reach £100 million. That kind of cash influx might make Newcastle less desperate to move another key piece, or it might make them more willing to listen to reasonable offers. Depends on who you ask.

No Official Bid Yet, But the Timing Is Right

There hasn’t been any club-to-club contact so far. Newcastle is maintaining its public stance that Guimaraes isn’t for sale. But the player has made his feelings known, and Arsenal is expected to formalize its interest in the coming weeks.

One factor that could speed things up: Brazil’s early exit from the World Cup. The Selecao got knocked out by Norway on Sunday, with Guimaraes having a first-half penalty saved. It was the first time Brazil failed to reach a World Cup quarterfinal since 1990. That tournament run ending early means Guimaraes is available for transfer talks sooner than Arsenal might have planned.

At 28 years old, Guimaraes is in his prime. He’s not a project. He’s a proven Premier League midfielder who can control tempo, break up play, and hit a pass that unlocks a defense. Arsenal needs that kind of profile in the middle of the park, especially if they’re serious about competing on multiple fronts next season.

Whether Newcastle actually lets him go remains the big question. But the player wants out, the buying club is ready to make a move, and the circumstances are lining up in a way that makes a deal feel more possible than it did six months ago.
