Connecticut Sun Without Head Coach as Losing Streak Looms. Houston Move Feels Closer Every Day.

The Connecticut Sun are trying to string together two wins for the first time this season. They’ll have to do it without the guy in charge.

Head coach Rachid Meziane is out sick for Friday night’s game against the Washington Mystics. The team announced it on their X account. Associate head coach Roneeka Hodges will run the sideline.

Meziane already had one of the toughest jobs in the league. He’s coaching a roster full of young players who aren’t ready to win consistently. Brittney Griner is still blocking shots and giving veteran leadership but she’s 34 and nearing the end. The Sun are not built to compete right now. That’s just the reality.

This Team Isn’t Going Anywhere. Literally.

In 2027 the franchise leaves for Houston. The Connecticut Sun become the Houston Comets again and Connecticut loses its only professional basketball team. Fans in the Nutmeg State are watching the end of something real. Mohegan Sun Arena might never host a playoff game again unless the WNBA eventually expands back into New England.

The front office and Meziane himself have no idea what happens after the move. Job security is a question nobody can answer yet. But they can’t think about that tonight.

Connecticut is 3-15. Dead last in the WNBA standings. One win against Washington and they’d climb out of the basement, at least temporarily. The Mystics are beatable but the Sun have lost nine of their last ten games. Nothing comes easy.

Players said they want to win this one for their sick coach. That kind of talk is cheap until tipoff. We’ll see if the energy translates.

The season feels like a long goodbye. The Sun know it. The fans know it. The only question is how many decent nights they have left before the whole thing packs up for Texas.
