Chelsea’s Andrey Santos Puts Playing Time Over Everything. That Could Lead Him to Manchester United.

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has hit a wall. And they’re looking at a guy who might not even start for Chelsea.

After locking in a $50 million deal for Ederson earlier this month, the plan seemed simple. Bring in Mateus Fernandes as a cheaper alternative to Elliot Anderson. But Tottenham hijacked the Fernandes move. And Manchester City matched Anderson with a club-record bid. Suddenly United’s engine room looks stalled.

Casemiro left on a free transfer to Inter Miami. The plan to sell Manuel Ugarte? Derailed by a serious knee injury. So right now, Kobbie Mainoo is the only midfielder with real job security at Old Trafford.

United have pivoted to Bournemouth’s Alex Scott. But the Cherries aren’t interested in selling. Manager Marco Rose has called the 22-year-old vital. Aurelien Tchouameni is still the dream replacement for Casemiro, but a deal feels like a long shot with Jose Mourinho happy to keep him in Madrid.

Enter Andrey Santos.

The 22-year-old Brazilian has been rising on United’s list, according to reports. He’s an all-action midfielder who can play both the 6 and 8 roles. That kind of flexibility is exactly what Michael Carrick’s midfield needs right now. Santos is smart on the ball, strong in duels, and has a relentless motor. He proved that during his loan at Strasbourg in France.

But at Chelsea, he’s stuck behind Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. Two of the best midfielders in the Premier League. So Santos is exploring an exit this summer. United have already held talks with his camp. Chelsea is open to selling if someone meets their $65 million valuation.

Santos made it clear he wants regular first-team football. According to TEAMtalk, he’s prioritizing a move where he can start every week. That’s tough at Chelsea with their deep squad and revolving door of managers. Sources close to Santos say he sees United as a very attractive destination. He thinks a move to Old Trafford would give him a structured environment and a shot at winning trophies.

His former manager Liam Rosenior has compared him to Brazilian legend Dunga. Rosenior called him world-class. And at $65 million, Santos is cheaper than most other targets United have looked at in the Premier League.

But here’s the thing. United already agreed to a $50 million deal for Ederson. Another Brazilian enforcer. If they land Santos and Ederson together, that’s two players who do similar things. Add Tchouameni and it starts to make sense. But if they also push for Scott, they’d have four relatively unproven midfielders and a combined bill close to $250 million.

Santos would be a great third-choice signing. Problem is, United already made that exact signing once this summer.
