Chelsea Youth Asset Andrey Santos Reportedly Getting Number 17 at Manchester United

Andrey Santos looks set to keep wearing the number 17 jersey, but this time at Old Trafford. The Brazilian midfielder, who wore that number at Chelsea, is reportedly close to completing a move to Manchester United this summer, and according to journalist Sam C, the shirt number is already locked in.

Santos, 22, never really got a proper run at Stamford Bridge. He arrived with plenty of hype, one of those young talents Chelsea scooped up under their current ownership model. But while the Blues have cycled through a lot of expensive prospects who didn’t pan out, Santos actually looked like one of the better finds. He showed flashes on loan, held his own in Brazil’s national team setup, and seemed like a guy who could grow into a reliable midfield option for years to come.

So it’s a little weird that Chelsea is letting him go, especially to a direct top-six rival. The decision wasn’t made slowly either. United fans are still waiting for the official announcement, but the move has been widely reported since The Athletic broke the story, and now the shirt number detail adds another layer of confirmation.

Why Chelsea letting Santos walk could haunt them

There’s a familiar feeling here for Chelsea supporters. It’s not exactly the same as letting Kevin De Bruyne leave for Wolfsburg in 2014, or watching Mohamed Salah head to Roma. But the pattern is hard to ignore. Both of those players turned into all-time Premier League greats after Chelsea moved them on. De Bruyne became a Manchester City legend. Salah did it at Liverpool. Both had something to prove, and both proved it emphatically.

Santos might not be at that level yet. But he’s got the tools, the work rate, and the kind of technical ability that makes you wonder why a club that has struggled to find midfield consistency would let him walk. Especially when the fee is reportedly modest. United is getting a player who already knows English football, already has a point to prove, and won’t cost a fortune.

The move hasn’t been made official yet, but all signs point to it happening soon. United fans are already buzzing about the potential upside. If Santos can channel even a fraction of the De Bruyne or Salah bounce-back energy, this could end up looking like one of the smarter deals of the summer.

For now, it’s a waiting game. But if the number 17 rumor is true, the only thing left is for Santos to put on the shirt and start making Chelsea wonder what they gave up.
