Chelsea Wants $145 Million for Enzo Fernandez. Real Madrid Might Actually Pay It.

Real Madrid’s summer shopping list just got a lot pricier. The European champions are deep in talks with Chelsea over midfielder Enzo Fernandez, and according to Defensa Central, things are moving faster than most people expected.

Fernandez has made it clear to his camp that he wants out of London. His preference? Madrid. The Bernabeu. And he’s been telling people that for a while now.

Here’s the problem for Real: Chelsea doesn’t want to sell. And when they do name a price, it’s eye-watering. The Blues want around €138 million, which works out to roughly $145 million or £120 million. That’s a lot of money for a player who’s been good but not great in the Premier League since his $120 million move in January 2023.

But Real Madrid’s midfield needs help. They’ve already added some pieces this summer, but the engine room still feels a step behind where it needs to be. Mateus Fernandes has been mentioned as an alternative, but the club keeps circling back to Fernandez. They like his profile. They like his age. They like that he’s already won a World Cup with Argentina.

Why Chelsea isn’t budging

Fernandez is under contract until 2032. That’s nine more years. Chelsea holds all the leverage here, and they know it. The club still views him as a cornerstone of the rebuild, even if the results haven’t fully matched the hype yet.

There’s little appetite inside Stamford Bridge to let him go unless someone blows them away with an offer. Real Madrid is trying. But blowing Chelsea away isn’t easy when the Blues paid more than $120 million for him 18 months ago and still owe a chunk of that transfer fee.

The Fernandez factor

One thing working in Madrid’s favor: the player himself. Fernandez has reportedly told his representatives that Spain is where he wants to be. The Bernabeu feels like the right next step for him. That kind of player-side pressure can change things, especially if Chelsea starts worrying about an unhappy star in the locker room.

But Chelsea isn’t desperate. They don’t need to sell. They’ve moved on from the chaotic spending spree of the Todd Boehly era and are trying to build something more stable. Losing Fernandez would force them back into the market for a replacement, and prices aren’t getting any cheaper.

No deal is done yet. But the conversations are real, and they’re picking up steam. If Real Madrid can find a way to get close to Chelsea’s asking price, this could get very interesting very quickly.
