Former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson made some noise this week when he claimed Klay Thompson is on his way to the Miami Heat. Speaking on Shannon Sharpe’s Nightcap show, Johnson didn’t hold back.
“Tim Hardaway. Klay will be there. I mean, I’m not supposed to be revealing this information, but I’m just throwing it out there. Nobody want to listen to me, but I’ve been right all along,” Johnson said.
Johnson also pointed to Thompson’s recent struggles and said the issue isn’t the player himself. “Things will change. The spacing on the floor will be a lot better for him to pop-and-shoot like he normally has in the past. You look at some of the teams, situations he’s been in — that’s why his numbers have declined. Nothing wrong with him, actually. He’s been in some bad situations.”
The Numbers Behind the Rumor
Thompson is entering the final season of his three-year, $50 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks. He’s set to make $17.4 million in 2026-27. That’s a big expiring contract, and it’s easy to see why teams might line up for his shooting if the Mavs decide to pivot.
But the Heat have already added Tim Hardaway Jr. on a one-year, $6.5 million deal. So the idea of pairing Thompson with Hardaway Jr. and a healthy Giannis Antetokounmpo is certainly a fun one for Miami fans.
The question is whether Johnson is working off real intel or just making a smart guess. The Heat have not confirmed any talks, and Thompson himself hasn’t said anything publicly about a move.
LeBron James Looms Over Everything
Of course, any conversation about Miami right now also involves LeBron James. The free agent has been linked to the Heat, and ESPN’s Shams Charania recently reported that Giannis Antetokounmpo would actually welcome James as a teammate.
“There’s a draw with Miami. Pat Riley is a draw. I think Erik Spoelstra is a draw, once again, all these years later,” Charania said. “I haven’t gotten any feel that there’s still tension between LeBron and Pat Riley that would detour him from that. I think Bam and Giannis are big draws for him too. He played Team USA with Bam. He has a lot of respect for Bam. Giannis would want LeBron in Miami, as well, from my understanding. No state taxes there. You played in Miami.”
If James and Antetokounmpo team up in Miami, adding a shooter like Thompson suddenly makes a lot more sense. But that’s three massive dominos that all have to fall in a specific order.
Big Dreams in South Beach
Miami already has Bam Adebayo locked in. Add Hardaway Jr. as a floor spacer. Stir in rumors of both Thompson and James. You’ve got the recipe for a potential superteam, but the Heat have been patient before. Pat Riley doesn’t rush.
For now, it’s Chad Johnson’s word against silence. And Johnson has been right before. But the NBA offseason is a long game, and Miami is playing it cool.
