Celtic Joins the Hunt for Man United’s Czech Goalkeeper After His Breakout Season

Radek Vitek was supposed to be a backup at Bristol City last season. Instead, he played so well that the starter left midway through the year and the 22-year-old Czech swept every major end-of-season award the club had to offer.

Now Manchester United has a problem. A good one, but a problem nonetheless.

Vitek wants to play. United’s roster is stacked. And Celtic just entered the race.

According to reports out of Scotland, the Hoops are the latest club to express serious interest in the 6-foot-6 goalkeeper, who spent last season on loan at Bristol City and absolutely balled out. He won Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year. That’s not a typo. He grabbed all three.

How Vitek went from backup to irreplaceable

Bristol City originally brought Vitek in as cover for Max O’Leary, their long-time No. 1. But O’Leary suffered a serious ankle injury in preseason, and Vitek stepped in. He never looked back. O’Leary left Ashton Gate six months into Vitek’s loan, which tells you everything about how good the kid was.

The Championship is not kind to young keepers. It’s direct, physical, relentless. Vitek handled it like a veteran, using his massive frame to dominate the box and his reflexes to make saves that had Bristol City fans chanting his name by October.

United fans have seen this before. They let go of Senne Lammens on a free transfer a few years ago, only to watch him develop into a legitimate starter. Lammens is now the undisputed No. 1 at Old Trafford. There’s no room for Vitek behind him, and the club knows it.

United’s goalkeeper room is full. Too full.

Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir are both expected to leave this summer. That frees up some space, but United already lined up Karl Darlow on a free transfer to back up Lammens. Tom Heaton signed a new deal in June and remains the third-choice, partly because of his influence in the locker room.

That leaves Vitek with two choices: go on loan again or leave for good. United hasn’t decided which path they prefer yet, but Vitek has made it clear he wants to play regularly. He’s 22. He’s not wasting another year on a bench.

And plenty of teams are willing to give him a chance.

The Celtic interest and what it means

Celtic, fresh off winning their 56th Scottish league title, are actively shopping for a goalkeeper. Manager Martin O’Neill said as much publicly. According to Football Insider, the Hoops have now entered what was already a heated race that includes Bristol City, Premier League newcomers Hull City and Rangers.

Vitek has two years left on his United contract. Celtic would prefer a permanent deal and are hoping United decide to cash in rather than loan him out again. Given that Vitek came through the academy, any transfer fee would count as pure profit under PSR rules. That’s a big deal for United’s summer budget.

It won’t be easy to get him to Celtic Park, though. The competition is real, and Bristol City wants him back badly. But if Celtic can sell him on regular European football and a starting role, they might have a real shot.

Vitek is at that strange point in a young player’s career where he’s too good to sit, but not quite established enough to force his way into a top club’s plans. For United, it’s a delicate balance. Keep him and risk losing him for less later. Or sell now and pocket the profit.

Either way, Vitek’s next move is going to tell us a lot about how he sees his own future.
