Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has made it clear what he expects from this summer’s transfer window — and it’s not just about adding bodies. The Red Devils boss, who took over from Ruben Amorim mid-season and steered the club to a third-place Premier League finish and Champions League qualification, is already deep in planning mode.
United have already secured a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson Silva for roughly £38 million, and according to recent reports, West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes could be next through the door. But Carrick isn’t stopping there. Some reports suggest the club could make as many as seven more signings after Ederson, with a midfield rebuild taking center stage after Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro are both expected to leave.
“Strong midfield and spine”
In an interview with BBC Sport, Carrick didn’t mince words about what the squad needs heading into a season where United will juggle multiple competitions.
“It’s essential to have a strong midfield and a strong spine on top of that. We’re certainly conscious of that,” Carrick said.
That admission lines up with what sources have indicated for weeks — that United are prioritizing the center of the pitch above all else. Depth across the board is a concern, but the engine room is the clear focus.
Winning and entertainment — both non-negotiable
When asked what his vision is for next season’s United side, Carrick gave a short but telling answer: “Winning, exciting football is what comes to mind.”
He added: “There are all sorts of different ways to get there but a version of winning and exciting football. There’s a responsibility to try and produce both.”
It’s a clear departure from the pragmatic approach that marked Amorim’s tenure. Carrick wants a team that can dominate and entertain — not just grind out results.
Working relationship with Ratcliffe
Carrick also offered a glimpse into his dynamic with INEOS chief and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, describing it as far less formal than outsiders might assume.
“Nothing crazy formal,” Carrick said. “It’s just chatting. Him picking my brains on a few things. General conversations about the players or club or feelings. It’s not maybe how you think it would be.”
He went on to note that Ratcliffe has given him room to operate. “He’s been good with me to be honest and left me to do a lot of the work and trusting me.”
With Champions League football secured and the transfer window just heating up, United are betting that a midfield spine — plus Carrick’s relationship with ownership — is enough to push them closer to the top next season.
