All Blacks Legend TJ Perenara to Lead Barbarians Against Springboks in Historic Gqeberha Clash

There’s something about the Barbarians that turns a rugby exhibition into a global spectacle, and this Saturday in Gqeberha, the script is getting a rewrite. All Blacks icon TJ Perenara will captain a stacked Barbarians side against the world champion Springboks — a fixture that feels less like a friendly and more like a statement.

Nineteen Test Caps, Eleven Nations, One Jersey

The 34-year-old scrum-half headlines a 23-man squad assembled by Scott Robertson that features 19 players with international experience. Eleven different countries are represented in the lineup, making this one of the most diverse Barbarians teams in recent memory. Perenara, who has 86 Test caps for New Zealand, will wear the armband in what could be his final appearance against South Africa’s elite.

Robertson didn’t hold back. Warrick Gelant starts at full-back, with Andrew Kellaway and Duhan van der Merwe on the wings — two of the most dangerous finishers in the modern game. The center pairing of Virimi Vakatawa and Alex Nankivell offers a blend of French flair and Irish grit. In the halves, Perenara partners Argentina’s Tomás Albornoz, a fly-half who has been turning heads in international rugby.

Forward Firepower Meets Barbarians Freedom

The forward pack isn’t short on muscle. Miracle Fai’ilagi, Lachlan Boshier, and Guido Petti form a mobile back-row. Alex Moon and Franco Molina lock the scrum, while D’arcy Rae, Elliot Dee, and Mayko Vivas anchor the front row. The bench is loaded with game-changers: Izack Rodda, Santiago Arata, and Harry Plummer can shift momentum in a hurry.

“We are all really excited for Saturday afternoon,” Robertson said. “To play against the world champions in South Africa is an awesome opportunity. We have embraced the Barbarians spirit and tradition this week, coming together as a group and enjoying each other’s company in Cape Town.”

He added: “It’s a team packed with talent, guys who have come from all over the world and have a great chance to showcase their ability in Gqeberha. We want to express ourselves and do the famous black and white jersey proud.”

On the other side, Springboks director of rugby Rassie Erasmus has named five uncapped players in his lineup — a sign that South Africa is treating this match as both a test of depth and a genuine competitive fixture.

The game is the headline event in a Gqeberha double-header that also features South Africa ‘A’ taking on Zimbabwe. For the Barbarians, it’s a chance to remind the rugby world that tradition and talent can still produce something electric.
