Carrick Eyes Shock Bundesliga Leader for Manchester United Backline

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has reportedly set his sights on Borussia Dortmund center-back Waldemar Anton, according to German outlet Ruhr Nachrichten. The 29-year-old German defender has quietly become one of the Bundesliga’s most reliable leaders, and Carrick apparently believes he’s the kind of veteran presence United need at the back.

Anton isn’t a flashy name. He’s not going to sell jerseys or dominate highlight reels. But he’s the type of player who organizes a backline, reads the game well, and rarely makes the kind of mistake that costs you a big game. And that’s exactly what United could use right now.

The timing is interesting. United already have Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martínez, Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven and Matthijs de Ligt on the roster. That’s five center-backs on paper. But Heaven is still raw, and de Ligt’s injury history is a real concern. He’s missed significant stretches in each of the last two seasons. So adding another experienced body makes sense, especially with Champions League soccer back on the schedule.

Dortmund coach Nico Kovac doesn’t want to lose Anton. The club is trying to lock him down with a new contract. But Anton is 29 and in his prime. This might be his last real chance to test himself in the Premier League. United can offer that, plus Champions League nights at Old Trafford. That kind of pull is hard for any player to ignore.

The big question is whether Dortmund will even entertain offers. They’re not exactly eager to sell one of their most consistent performers. United might have to overpay to make this happen. Premium pricing for a player who isn’t young anymore but still has plenty left in the tank.

Carrick’s system requires defenders who can handle one-on-one situations and stay focused for 90 minutes. Anton fits that profile. He’s not the fastest, but his positioning is smart and he’s strong in the air. He’d be a steadying influence next to someone like Yoro or Martínez.

Nothing is close yet. No formal bid has been made, and Dortmund are still pushing for an extension. But these things tend to move quickly once a player decides he wants out. If Anton tells the club he wants the move, United will have a real chance to get their man.

For now, it’s a situation worth watching. United need defensive depth and Anton needs a new challenge. Sometimes the math is that simple.
