Caitlin Clark and Saniya Rivers Both T’d Up After Clark Pointed at the Scoreboard

Things got chippy in Indianapolis on Tuesday night. Caitlin Clark and Connecticut Sun guard Saniya Rivers were each hit with a technical foul after a late-third-quarter exchange that started with Clark pointing at the scoreboard.

With under a minute left in the third, Clark drew a foul from Sun center Olivia Nelson-Ododa. Rivers had something to say about the call, and Clark didn’t appreciate it. She fired back and gestured toward the scoreboard — Indiana was up 28 at the time. The message was clear: the game was basically over.

The refs didn’t love it. Both players got a tech.

As it turned out, Clark was right. The Fever blew the doors off in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Sun 26-19 on their way to a 123-88 win at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. It was a statement game for Indiana, who improved to 16-10 while Connecticut dropped to 7-19.

Clark’s night was huge

Clark finished with 27 points on 8-for-13 shooting, including five 3-pointers. She added 11 assists, a steal, a block — and six turnovers. But she was a plus-26 in 27 minutes. She was also listed on the Fever’s injury report before the game before being upgraded to available.

Rivers had 13 points on 6-for-14 shooting off the bench for the Sun. Not a bad line, but it didn’t matter much given the final margin.

One more tech and Clark sits

Here’s the part that matters beyond one win in July. Clark’s technical foul puts her one away from an automatic one-game suspension. The WNBA’s technical foul limit is eight, and she’s now sitting at seven. Another tech and she’s out for a game.

That’s a real problem for the Fever. Clark is the engine of the team, and losing her for even one game during a playoff push would be a serious blow. The league doesn’t mess around with the suspension rule — it’s automatic, no warnings.

So Clark will have to keep her cool. Or at least keep her hands off the scoreboard.
