Manchester United has spent most of this summer chasing midfielders and coming up empty. Elliot Anderson went to Manchester City for £116 million because United wouldn’t match Nottingham Forest’s asking price. Mateus Fernandes looks headed to Tottenham after West Ham refused to budge on an £80 million valuation. Alex Scott? Bournemouth made it clear he’s not going anywhere.
So here we are in late June and United still needs a midfielder. But a new name has resurfaced and this one might actually make sense.
Bruno Guimaraes wants out of Newcastle. According to multiple reports, the 28-year-old Brazil international has grown frustrated with the club’s lack of progress and willingness to sell key players around him. He’s the captain and he’s watched teammates leave without much fight from the front office. That grinds on a guy.
Fabrizio Romano reported this week that Arsenal made a formal approach for Guimaraes with a £55 million offer. Newcastle rejected it immediately. They’re holding out for something closer to £60-70 million. That’s still less than what West Ham wants for Fernandes and a fraction of what Nottingham Forest got for Anderson.
The interesting part is what happens next. Arsenal made the first move but United has a secret weapon in this one: Casemiro. The two Brazilians are teammates at the World Cup right now and Casemiro has reportedly been pushing Guimaraes to join him at Old Trafford. When asked about it, Guimaraes called it a “privilege” to be wanted by a player of Casemiro’s stature. That’s not nothing.
Guimaraes turns 30 next year, which puts him outside the typical INEOS recruitment model. They’ve been targeting players between 22 and 26. But exceptions get made for exceptional players and Guimaraes has been one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders since arriving from Lyon in 2022 for £40 million. He can play as a defensive midfielder, a box-to-box guy or even push higher up the field. 31 goals and 32 assists in 195 games for Newcastle tells you he produces in multiple ways.
Newcastle won’t want to lose him. He’s their captain and their talisman. But if a player wants out and a reasonable offer comes in, the club has shown it will sell. United just needs to decide if it’s willing to pay what it takes.
This is a golden opportunity buried inside a frustrating summer. United has struck out on three targets already. Guimaraes is available, he wants to leave and the price is actually reasonable by modern standards. Sometimes you just pay the man and stop overthinking it.
